acatack
Hi all. I'm in need of some help. We've been in Melbourne for around three weeks, we've bought a car, secured a long term house rental and enrolled our 10 year old in a school. My wife is desperately trying to find a job, but the thing which the poms in oz forum predicted has come true.....we're struggling a bit with finding something education wise for our 17 year old. We've managed to figure out we can enroll him into a college to redo the second half of year 11 and then go straight on to year 12, but we're exploring other education options. He wants to do an IT course, possibly certificate 3 or 4, but this is where our problem comes in. Is he classed as an international student? We're happy to pay the fees, within reason, but so many courses are not open to international students. Does anyone have experience similar to this? We're here on a 457 visa so from a victorian school point of view he's not an international student.
ali
He would be classed as international for college/TAFE/Uni .. domestic fees are for those on PR visas
ali
Is it possible to see if he can do year 11 and 12 at a school - he might also be able to do some cert II courses as part of the curriculum, if there's a possibility of you getting PR in 2 years, then he could do TAFE or Uni once PR. acatack
Maribyrnong college will accept him for year 11 and year 12 without being classed as international, but thats more of a school anyway. To a certain extent we're happy paying the fees if only the course were open and available to his enrollment.
Ahmad Shady
Some states will take in 457/489 to schools as if they are domestic, but that does not change the fact that a temporary/provisional visa holder is NOT a domestic student. Universities won't budge about that AFAIK
starlight7
TAFE is a lot cheaper than uni but make sure if you go that way that it is a good TAFE- there are a few rubbish ones around.

Good points Many RTOs also are dodgy and exist merely for dodgy reasons. Make sure they offer authentic education
acatack
Thanks all. There seem to be a few dodgy TAFE colleges which we're not happy with putting him in. At this stage I would say going through the second half of year 11 and then year 12 is his best option given the comments youve all made and the discussions Ive had with schools etc.
Quoll
All depending on what he might want to do with his year 12 certificate, he could be disadvantaged by only doing half of year 11. The usual recommendation is to do the whole year 11 but he is really getting a bit old to do that in a school environment. Is there any chance you could return him to finish his A levels then join you?

Is there any chance you could return him to finish his A levels then join you? No, he didnt do brilliantly at his GCSE's so wasnt accepted to do A levels. Hes been doing the first half of pre GCSE Maths and a level 1 IT course in College in the UK. Doing the second half of year 11 and then year 12 sounds like a good route for him as he has the option to go onto the TAFE courses then, as well as getting involved in the VET or VCAL part in school. rammygirl
Best option would probably be to look at a less school based year 11/12. No idea about VIC but in SA there is one attached to the Uni and a few more private ones that are much less school like in environment and the way they treat students. Worse would probably be one that has primary school kids on site and strict uniform rules still for older ones. Certainly our eldest opted out of his school year 11/12 to go to somewhere with more of a college than a school feel.
