UK primary school teacher looking to teach in Perth
Hi there. I have been teaching in the UK for 2 years and completed a 3 year BEd primary degree. Will I have to retrain in Australia or can I teach in Perth using my qualification I got in UK? Many thanks. Ross :)

I cant answer your question but thought i would bump it up for you as someone else ( hopefully) will

No you wont be able to teach in Perth with your qualifications. Teachers in Australia require 4 year training these days so you will either need to retrain completely or to do a fourth year somewhere.

Ahh I see thank you. The BEd course I took used to be the 4 year but they reduced it to 3 years. I didn't think they offer the 4 years training anywhere anymore? I've given up my permanent contract in the UK for teaching in Auz so I'm hoping it's possible!!! :)

Oh no! can you rescind your notice and just take a career break? I can tell you that the 4 year training is cast in concrete for registration so I seriously doubt it will be possible - and there are loads of well qualified primary teachers in the major metropolitan areas all vying for the jobs anyway. If you are prepared to do something other than teaching you may be OK but to teach you are going to need that fourth year. Some Australian universities used to do the fourth year program but I would think they might have all disappeared by now as it has been the rule for many years and all of the 3 yr teachers will have retired.

You will need four years of university education to be allowed to teach anywhere in Australia.
As you already have a Bachelor of Education, then you would need to do a Masters for one year or even do a graduate certificate in an area you interested in such as special needs or early childhood. Either is fine as long as you are based at the university. There are one or two universities that still offer an add on year for three year trained teachers.
Also you will need your degree assessed by the overseas qualification unit in Perth. Then after you have completed the fourth year of study you can then apply to WACOT to become a registered teacher here.
There are hundreds of teachers looking for positions here and it is extremely hard to get a job in the city areas, let alone ever get permanency. There are more positions available in remote areas.
