Are all state school co-Ed???
Just a thought?? From anything I have looked at so far, all state schools (currently looking at melbourne) seem to be co-education. Is this a given or have I just not looked hard enough yet??
Sorry should have said are all Primary State Schools Co-Ed....???
So many things to think about!!!!

Agree, we're in Sydney and only know a few same-sex primary schools and they're independent private. Same-sex high schools a little more common but still not the norm for public schooling. Have you discovered My School website to get a list of schools in the area you're looking? The Victorian Government School Performance Summary is also useful.
All the best.

Out of curiosity, why do you think that same-sex class is better? I was always part of a mixed class until I started nursing school. It was fine in both for me.

Seems to be a school of thought that girls do a lot better in subjects such as maths and Science when boys are not there, Also less distractions!!
There is at least one private school here in Sydney that is co ed but separates the sexes right from Kindergarten so although girls and boys they do very little together.

First time I hear about it
. To me it seems that separation is unnatural, how do they learn to interact with each other? And the aptitude for science and math would depend on the peers they share the class with.... strange

Do not know of any single sex primary schools. Even the top private schools are moving away from single sex schools. Peninsula used to be an all boy school but now its gone co-ed.
Single sex schools mainly are private and if you look at this site you will find them. However there are moves afoot by people saying its outdated and wanting them to change to co-ed.

Thanks guys, some really good insight and info. To answer your question Maruska, my girls are currently attending an all girls primary school... so I guess I just went on auto-pilot and was looking for some of the same in Melbourne for when we arrive...to make the move the least disruptive for them I guess.
As mentioned by "relocate Northern Beaches" there is a train of thought here in Ireland that girls perform better in single sex school's...less distractions. They publish results here that would echo this. It also comes down to your location here, if you are not in the catchment of a certain area, you can not attend the school....it's amazing when you start looking into it... some schools here also only accept you on the basis of your parents or some previous family attending the school - Don't know that they will be able to get away with that rule much longer!!!!
