Shipping Belongings
Hello All
My family and i are set to arrive in Oz on the 31st March 2010, we are hoping to ship all our furniture out with us, my questions to all out there with experience of this are-
1. is it quite expensive to ship furniture,? if so how much am i kind of looking at?
2. when it arrives will storage be an issue? as we will have to find accomodation first
3. what are peoples experience with all the electrical items, for instance T.V's Computers (Laptop and xbox) washing machines etc, do they all work?
I would be eternally grateful if you would share your experiences

Hi gaz,
I have not shipped stuff out here, but many have and i am sure you will get a load of info to help you.
As for your electrical stuff it should all work out here as the Aussie voltage is the same as the UK.
Computers are fine, as are your domestic appliances. The TV if a newer one should work but you may have to change its settings to Germany or Netherlands as they work on the same frequency as Australia, failing that i beleive if you purchase a 'set top box' for freeview in Australia and use it through that.
One tip, Bring plenty of UK-Australia plug adapters, as you will spend hours running round swopping them over if you want to use anything. You can buy Australian plugs for the appliances, but you may find that any household insurance you take out will insist plugs are changed by a qualified electrician. All Australian appliances like UK appliances now come with a sealed plug on them.

Hi Gaz, if you look at the threads, you can see different peoples experiences and costings.
I had a 20ft container from Scotland to Tasmania.. cost around about GDP4,500 ish which included packing, exclusive of insurance. I was delighted with the service I received at both sides of the globe.
Storage....cant advise you but there are plenty that will help you there.
TV's.... again all worked here for me, but there are the more experienced who will guide you. Laptops, Washing Machines, Dishwashers, and all other electrical items, no worries there, all work beautifully.
Enjoy your journey Susie x
NB Colin Srp made a good point there, I think my sparky husband sat down and changed something like 42 plugs (lol) with a slab of beer alongside him of course to alleviate the boredom!

Hi, I've just had a couple of quotes of around that price too, for a 20 ft container. As to storage, the company that ship your goods can provide storage, and to be honest, its pence!! Think off the top of my head it was about £10 per week. Notwthing in the wider scheme of things!

We migrated 3 years ago, so the cost won't be the same now. Remember that it can take 10 - 12 weeks to arrive at dock and another couple of weeks to clear customs. We were very lucky that we managed to secure a furnished rental for 12 weeks and the day we moved into our own house was the day the shipment was delived from dock.

Have just done what you are about to do and, 4 months down the line, are still trying to clear things. We bought our furniture and a car and motorbike. Our furniture took about a month to clear and be delivered to us. The car and the bike have only just been cleared, we are trying to register them now! I am glad that we bought some of our things with us as furniture is quite expensive here and it has really helped to settle my kids having their own stuff around them. It was a bit of a hassle but I am glad that we did. We used PSS International in UK and dealt with Overseas Packers and Shippers on this side. We had a few small issues with some of our goods but not a lot. We moved into an unfurnished house and had to buy odd bits just to tide us over until our stuff arrived. You can hire furniture or hire a semi furnished house but this all costs. Bear in mind that it can take around a month just to get the items cleared. The nightmare part was when the guys came in to pack everything up - it was like a whirlwind had come through our house and things where sent that we did not want sent and things that we wanted were not packed in so be organised. If you need anymore information let me know.

Oh another quick one - our main tv did not work just by pluging into the aerial but it works beautifully through a set top box. Everything else, apart from the 50 or so plugs that we have had to change, works fine.
