is there much work for new immigrants in australia

reading between the line it seems australia is heading for better times in the employment market--so whats the situation regarding new immigrants looking for work in australia--have the australians moved from giving jobs to australians, and not employing immigrants--is there a skill shortage in australia at this present time--whats happining in your neck of the woods in australa--is there work avaiable, and if so what type of work--have the bad times gone--have wages gone up much in the last 3 years---is the so called recession well, and truly over in australia--is it back to where it was 5 years ago--in other words whats happining in australia regarding work

Joanne is right your occupation does have a lot to do with it ,also the area you move to. Most of the familys i have met this year all found work within their first month. Health workers seeming to find work easier than most and often ending up with a choice of offers.

I think new 'tradey' migrants need to look at areas carefully and try and choose places within commutable distance of growth areas were theres the chance work is more readily available for tradesmen. Its good to get on white cards and licences as soon as you arrive so you have more ammunition on your side when applying.

Neither should people be put off by a 'temporary' or 'casual' position, as lots of companys do this to see if you can do the job before committing to you.

So i guess yes things are on the up, albeit some areas and proffesions slower than others.

      Cal x

Wow, how long is a piece of string ?
There are just way too many variables really, where we are in Queensland it is OK but not great, around 5.5% but very regional of course. Areas where mining is the major employer it would be much lower and in more isolated regions obviously higher but like everywhere it all averages out.

Immigrants have always been employed, of course some Aussie employers will favour Aussies but again that's the same anywhere.

There will always be work available but depending on what you do you may have to travel for it, sometimes interstate.

People have to be prepared (perhaps) to look at different work for a while until they can get teh career they want. At the end of the day I know I would clean toilets if that was the only job I can get! As long as I could pay my bills!
Not everyone is like that though.

      Hi everyone

me and the wife have just put in for redundency here in the uk, she is a senior nurse - a medical ward sister and as you know i am a screw, theres teachers, police, civil servants, government and council workers all being made redundant, so any offer of work somewhere else is better than nothing.

Lying on the beach all day alan, that's the best job ! We're not short of people to do that though. To be serious for 30 seconds or so, there are some trades which are short such as refrig/aircon, plumbers etc. Joanne mentioned cleaning, and that is well paid here, I used to have a Domestic Help agency and earned good money, with some extra builders cleanups and rentals etc. I mentioned gardening on another thread as well yesterday, as some of my friends have started doing gardening/mowing lawns, taking rubbish away and like the outdoor lifestyle. Also as I am having a career change soon into health and safety, that also is a big area, lots of jobs advertised. There are lots of things you can turn your hand to if you are willing and have some ideas about how to run a small business too.
