Did you/Are you going to - have a leaving party?
Okay so we're still not heading out to Oz till 2010, but i do like a party and have been fantasizing about a big leaving party before we go, with EVERYONE we need to say goodbye too, to make sure we don't miss anyone out!
But i was wondering if anyone else has done this and if it was good or if it was just a miserable party because everyone was upset? I could just imagine my mum sitting in the corner crying the whole time!!
But on the other hand it would be so nice to have all our family and friends together like that and say goodbye properly! I mean i'm sure we would then have our own private goodbyes with the very close friends and family, but for all those sort of outer friends, like clients and nieghbours etc... otherwise you would be so busy trying to see them all individually!!
What d'ya reckon??

We're planning on a very special party for our farewells, we have planned to get married before we leave and will use the evening do as a joint farewell party. It will be one hell of a party, with lots of pics and videos, and i'll be leaving a huge notebook out where everyone will write a little somthing in it so we can take it with us to OZ.
We dont plan to leave for another 3- 4yrs but this was one of the first things we discussed as we were going to get married nxt year but we're putting it off now just to make it that xtra special.

I feel a bit like you Meggs.
We are party people and It would be nice to see everyone BUT. I went to my best friends party this year - she went to Spain - and it was awful, people just crying and getting upset at anything. At the end they played Loch Lomond by Runrig and I had to leave. I felt emotions I never knew I had.
So we have decided to have a party for the kids' friends etc., and thats it. We will go and see everyone, maybe out for dinner a lot but no big farewell. We dont have the backing from some close family members/friends and think this is the best way ....For Us. Or maybe we are just trying to protect ourselves from the emotion of it all.

Oh mandy that sounds so horrible!!! See thats the last thing i want, everyone crying!!! ANd it only takes one to start it off!!
Now i'm thinking to maby have it just friends and aqaintances, as it may be too much for my family to deal with. Like you we have alot of opposition, and i think it might ruin things if my sister and mum were just crying all the time! Where as friends and aquauintances, whilst there will still be tears, it will be alot less traumatic!
I love the idea of an australia themed party!!! And being able to have everyone in one room again.

We're hiring a hall with bouncy castles, kids disco etc. for the kids. Then a big do for everyone some night not too long before we go. Everyone will be forewarned, NO TEARS!, although maybe easier said than done.

Hi Sheena
I think the "NO TEARS" rule is great.
BUT.........
I only think that it will work if there is another rule -
NO DRINK The two just dont mix lol
Good luck and buy plenty hankies
