Chewing the fatPlease keep all off topic conversations here. This forum can get heated. There are two rules, Personal insults will not be tollerated and keep it clean!
I’ve just logged on and been reading through the new posts as I do most days. As usual the posts that dominate are the same old bickering about who is right and who is wrong, who is more popular, who’s worthy or not worthy of an opinion. Well today when reading Geoffrey’s thread about ‘newbies’ posting when they haven’t been around long enough to understand the status quo, I was thinking to myself that if I really wanted to be ‘in the loop’ then I was going to have to put some serious hours in on PIO before I too was ‘worthy’ of an opinion.
That’s when I hit upon my problem. My problem is that I struggle to keep up with the latest state of affairs on PIO because I have something a little more preoccupying called ‘a life’. And I thought I would just give you guys a little reminder that out there, beyond your computer screen is a whole world that needs exploring.
It strikes me that some of the people who have self reigned themselves ‘king of the forum’ for being grumpy and miserable with nothing positive to say about anything, perhaps need to get out there and start reminding themselves that there is in fact a real world out there, full of ‘real’ people.
I will put my hands up and say I too am guilty! I also get mesmerized by my computer screen to the point where I have to surgically peel my arse off my seat to go and take the dog for a walk, or meet up with friends, or eat dinner with my family. But I know that when I do I’m much happier, and feel much more fulfilled.
This is a great forum and has already proved a great support to me in a time of need, and I expect it will again. I even hope I will meet some of you in real life one day. Whenever I need help with anything Oz related I know I can find it here, and so will many many others.
But next time your reading a post that makes you angry or upset, take a step back from your computer, turn around and look out the window and ask yourself if there is something more fulfilling you could be doing with your time. And next time a newbie, or someone who doesn’t post very often makes a naïve post, take a deep breath before you post your sarcastic demoralizing answer and remember that that person has probably been out enjoying the fresh air whilst you’ve been waging your cyberspace popularity campaign.
Meggs
I think a lot of people who are in the UK spend a lot of time on this forum because they want to pick up as much knowledge about Oz as possible to ensure they get the best start and don't make the same mistake as others or are genuinely trying to help others.
Some people post here to release their frustration regarding visas & houses and others for sympathy when things go wrong. These sort of forums are always addictive when you're bored or just killing time which is what a lot of people waiting to go to oz are also doing.
I think you'll find that few of the regular posters other than the moderators are actually in Australia and most of those are unhappy or bored although there are a few exceptions. The happy ones in Oz are as you say out there enjoying their new lives.
I have to confess even though I am at home today and hoovering etc.. my computer is logged onto PIO and I keep coming back for a peep to see what is happening. I am addicted but this site has been very useful as I have made some great friends on here that live in the UK and in Australia and also met up with some of my UK friends.
I don't log on when I have guests over though - honest
Oh sorry guys i wasn't suggesting your all a bunch of saddos, if i was them i would have to tar myself with the same brush!
What i am getting at is this continual popularity contest and this feeling of not being in with the clique unless you are on here 24/7. Most of us don't have time to keep up with all that and want to just use the forum for the things pinhead highlighted, but nearly every thread seems to eventually get tainted by the regular miserable lot, which makes you feel like you either need to give up work and dedicate your whole life to PIO, or give up using the site.
When i find myself getting sucked into a heated debate or arguement I try and remind myself its just a forum!!!!
I have put lots of posts on here as you can probably see where my avator is.
You got me wondering now, as I am a regulary PIO user do people think that I am clicky, or only speak to certain people????
Try to be helpful and cheerful but I have to say I have probably had my moments LOL

That is all.
Good post megs, but I too hold my hands up, Im guilty too.
The reason Im always on here is that this forum is the only place I talk about oz, apart from my husband. Nobody else knows our plans as yet, we haven't even told the kids, although the are only 5 and 3 so wouldn't really understand anyway.
But I do feel there is a click in the air, although in defence of some I don't think they mean to cause a click.
I do try to limit myself on here, because like you say life is for living, and we shouldn't waste it sitting in front of our computer screens.
I for one will be logging off by tea time, I have a life to lead tonight.....by that I mean putting a dvd on and doing the ironing........see I have a life.....lol
