Talking completly off topic plumbing question

Hello, I am being really cheeky I know.............

but .............................

I know there are plumbers here somewhere and I have a problem that is driving me mad

every time I put my dishwasher on it makes the pipes bang, it sounds like someone is doing DIY all over the house, I guess this means there is air in the pipes but I don't know how to get it out and stop the banging

I have rung a couple of people - dishwasher repair and plumbers but they do not seem interested in tackling the problem

can any one help, please, please, pretty please with sugar on the top

If it is air in your pipes............ you can get rid of the air by connecting a short piece of hose pipe to the hot and cold taps in the bathroom................ then turn both taps on and let them run for a while. It's an old plumber's trick from wayback.

The weird noise and the clunking or clanging sound and vibration you are getting is known as water-hammer.................. which could be caused by a variety of things?

Insufficient clipping of pipes was a common cause of water-hammer; also the wearing down of tap-washers. Water-hammer occurs usually if you were to suddenly shut off the flow of water like when using the dishwasher.......... a washing machine........ the ball cock rising rapidly in the toilet cistern........... or by merely closing a tap suddenly.

Shutting off the flow instantly causes pressure or shock waves to be sent throughout the system resulting in creaking, vibrating............ or even wailing (not quite like Bob Marley). In the UK we used to be able to fit a shock absorber............ it was like a coupling with corrugated rubber insert which in theory absorbed the shock through the rubber?

Down-under I think we call them water hammer shock arrestors.......... or summat like that............ I've even heard them referred to as water capacitors but I always thought a capacitor was an electrical thingy? Anyway.......... whatever the correct termonology is............. I'm pretty sure you can pick them up at Bunnings and suchlike?

Try the short piece of hose-pipe trick............. if that doesn't work............... you may solve the problem by replacing tap washers......... there is a special anti-water-hammer
absorbent spring loaded rubber washer on the market.

Good luck.

Hello, I've asked Bradley and read him Bobcat's reply. Bradley says........if it's plumbed up correctly off cold water mains, it won't be air. It will simply be pipes aren't clipped sufficiently.......or if it is plumbed from a cold water storage tank it will be the washer on the ball valve. Hope you get it sorted.

Hi KazzE
like bradley said it shouldnt be air and it certainly should not be plumbed into any stoarage water only mains you dont say if it has only just been put installed or if its been there some time it could be the soloniode on the cold water fill to the dishwasher thats at fault

Hi guys, thanks so much for the replies

the dishwasher has been plumbed in for a while and was not making noise to start with so it sounds like the solinoide thingy - any idea how much that would cost to replace and how long it should take?

may get hubby to try the hosepipe thing and replace washers as they have all been there a while

would be nice to put the dishwasher on and not have banging all over the house, I usually put it on and go out!

ta very much

The banging pipes is just the water moving round - and banging against things they are in like walls/floors.

The reason they are making the noise is due to the plumbers making too big a space for the pipes and they are literally rattling round - a bit of pipe insulation or similar would help.

I'm not a plumber - I'm actually a sparky but I've seen enough pipes to know what the problem is.
