Everyone has the right to die with dignity, and although, legally, he didn't get the outcome that he wanted, it would appear that he got the outcome nonetheless. ''Locked in'' is one of the worst conditions I have ever witnessed in my patients, along with Motor Neurone Disease. I have mixed feelings about Euthanasia as I am geared towards preserving life in my job. I always used to hold the opinion that if things got that bad, then the person should have the right to end their life. But my mother had a severe stroke, in which she lost all capabilities to communicate effectively. In the early days, we opted for a DNR- Do not resuscitate. And although we were told her condition would never ever improve, but it did improve, bit by bit and we had some very happy times together before she died. I am not religious but I am spiritual and I don't believe that anyone has the right to ''play God''.

I am relieved for him and his family - seems like the end came quickly, although not quick enough for him.

Good on him and his family for trying to clarify the law for the many people who do or will experience the existence that he has done for the last few years. It's such a shame that a tragic story was again hijacked by the religious right, talking about eugenics and return of nazism if physically disabled people were given the right to end their life. At least he is now free from the pain and lack of dignity that he had to endure.

Other side of this is that Legalizing mercy killings could pressure the elderly into going down this path to reduce the burden on their children and on society,I think a very ill person whose life has become intolerable has the right to end it but......

That's akin to saying that because some people have access to alcohol everyone will drink themselves to death.
There are plenty of checks and measures in place to ensure that this law is not abused - don't be fooled by the propaganda.

I don't ever see Euthanasia being legalized in my lifetime. There are too many loopholes and the whole Mental Capacity thing is an absolute minefield......
