Whats your thoughts on public transport Uk/Oz
Carrying on from the the Hoffs good news from the Uk thread. How do you feel about using public transport. Do you think it a convenient and good service or would nothing get you out of your car.
I sold my car to fund the move to Oz and have had no probs using public transport (even though i have had a car now for over 20 years and didnt have a clue about catching a bus).
Other peoples reactions have been surprising though. Ranging from "what do you mean youve sold the car" to "you would never catch me on the peasant wagon". Is this a regional thing. Go to London and they seem to be proud of their public transport.
How is it where you live?

FREE, really wow even better. No direct links here, and if you take a car its a choice of £5 upwards to park or risk a parking fine

I live in Portland, Dorset and our bus service is amazing and the bus drivers are really friendly, one even sings and tells every one 'to hang on tight' and what stop we are heading for. I also loved the transport on and around Bribie Island Oz and the surrounding towns, but know the drivers personally, and they are really lovely. Its a pleasure to use public transport, gave my car up months ago and to be honest, haven't missed it much.

Where I live the public transport isnt very good but thats cos i live in the countryside, if i moved to one of the bigger towns or even Glasgow then obviously its going to be a hundred times better. They dont make it very easy for us here if you dont drive, some of the buses finish early - like after 7pm! and they've just announced that they're cutting one of our main buses to every 90 minutes instead of a hour. I find the fares quite expensive, i paid nearly £4 to go to a interview that was under 20minutes away, trains to Glasgow and other places are quite expensive too but i guess you can buy a weekly or monthly pass if your using them a lot. They seem to be cancelled a lot with signalling problems etc and winters a total nightmare but thats probably the same everywhere

Understand that Stacey, Came from and lived in the Scottish highlands for a v v long time. Daft thing there is thats where the people need it the most and yet it is so infrequent. We keep getting told to use it more but unless they make it more available what can you do. Chicken and the egg i suppose.People wont give up their cars unless there is a good alternative but i dont suppose they can put that in place unless they know it is going to be used by the majority.

I know, theres lots of elderly people who use it to go to the bigger towns for their shopping and just to get out the house. Its rubbish that they're cutting the hours, we were hoping they'd change their minds but its going ahead - next week i think. I dont blame people for using their cars here, if i could afford my driving lessons at the moment i'd be zooming through 2 a week untill i passed

Odd, innit??? Almost 49 years in Australia and never used public transport yet. Either got lifts to work, had company car, or close enough to walk to, before I bought a car.
Cheers, Bobj.
