I thought they were expensive because of Australian Copyright Laws which are now strangling Australian book retailers 'cos they have to peddle Australian versions that folks can get from Amazon in where-ever for a fraction of the price.
Personally, I love 'proper' books - one's that I can use to smack my 11 yo round the lug-hole with when he gives his ma cheek. I get them from Amazon or the Book Depository. I sometimes get around to reading them too.

Can book clubs be found in Oz? Thought it would be a good way to meet people and swap books. I'm like a lot of your and love holding a book, I also like collecting a library of them so prefer to buy than borrow. I do tend to borrow my daughters books though, are childrens books good quality in OZ?

I went to the charity shop in the uk and bought lots of books at 4 for £1 and shipped them over but whilst I was waiting for the container to come I did find some cheap book shop, they all had English priced stickers on and couldn't believe it was cheaper to buy imported books than any others.

Ah! You mean "Australia in futile and counter-productive protectionist policy non-shocker"??
Who'd 'a thunk it?

Id hate to admit it but Im thinking of getting a Kindle if it saves me money. Does anyone know how much ebooks are in comparison?
Thanks
They are a lot cheaper and you can store hundreds on a kindle. You can get them free too, wonders of the internet, as soon as things get digitised they are free, as long as you know where to look.
I bought the wife a kindle and she thought it was great when she got it. Battery lasts for ages, but she has gone back to books. My kids have surprised me recently. They are 22 and 17 and have both been going to bed early to read, unbelievable. One is reading the hunger wars trilogy and the other Eragon.
You can find lots of books in garage sales and markets for next to nothing. There are also quite a few second hand book stores around. Some are a bit expensive though but that's usually the ones in shopping centres that have to pay high rents.
Forgot to mention the local libraries are excellent. There is a fantastic one in Joondalup.
The salvos shops always have a good selection too, for next to nothing.
