      Sydney 24X7! England - Sorry we close at 1030pm - it's Sunday!

Whilst I'm not advocating staying out all night, nor drinking all night, it is rather refreshing to know that you have other options than going to bed as soon as MOTD2 finishes!

I did not actually intend to stay out after midnight but I was sitting at the bar in The Strawbery Hills talking to the barstaff and they invited me out. We went first to the Evening Star, which closes at 3am then we went on to The Madison and I reluctantly, giving in to my age, went home at 4.30am leaving them to 'kick on!'

      1020pm 'Last Orders!'
      1030pm 'Time, Gentlemen Please!
Twenty minutes to guzzle down your beer so they can kick you out.

Why do they think we are still fighting The First World War and need to be in bed and up to work in the munitions factories!

You're not comparing like with like

It's only a pretty small section of inner Sydney bars where you can get served any time.....and you won't be surprised to learn you can do the same in London or other big cities too

Yeah, most pubs in the UK don't bother with extensions esp. on Sunday, but the days of 11pm strict stop tap everywhere unless you want to go to the hassle of a club licence are long gone.

I find things here tend to close earlier, fwiw. In the inner city they don't, but elsewhere bars and cafes seem to shut really early to me

In Texas stop time is 2am and starting is 9am next day if I remember right. In Louisiana it's 24 hours a days...no stop time for selling liquor. Bars literally stay open until the sun comes up.

Ah, well, if you live out in the 'burbs, and you want to 'kick on', you have to go a club, - Revesby Workers, Bankstown Sports, Easts Leagues, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL, etc. etc. I used to sometimes come back to Revesby when I lived at my brothers, and pop into Revesby Workers to either ring for a cab or use their courtesy bus service. Those big clubs are open more for the gamblers and pokie players, as are the pubs come to think of it, but I'm glad to take advantage of their largesse.

I don't remember much in Southampton being open late and even in London, the pubs all seemed to close early, although there may have been nightclubs where you could go. What I like about Sydney, whether you want to go in a pub, or a club, you can just roll up, nothing to pay, as long as you are (reasonably) sober.

What pinpot said. Licensing laws have changed a great deal in the UK. Most pubs don't bother with extended/late opening hours on Sunday's as there generally isn't enough business to make it worth their while. Cities and large towns, some bars in those tend to make use of longer opening hours on a Sunday but it is a quiet night of the week in many places still.

It's funny the way drinking habits vary from place to place

When I lived in Wales, Sunday drinking was *massive* - everyone was out on a Sunday night, with the predictable levels of Monday absenteeism ;-)

The cultural reason for this, supposedly, was a hangover (sorry) from the days when Wales was "dry" on Sundays - the last district to go "wet" only did it in the 1990s, so we're not talking long ago (I remember voting in a local referendum on the issue as well, about the same time). You couldn't drink on Sundays, legitimately, but private members clubs were a grey area and everyone knew the rugby clubs in particular just ignored it. So if you wanted to go for a drink on a Sunday, you went to the rugby club, but they had to be quite discreet so popping in for one or two was discouraged - you went out to get mullered. Net result = a culture of Sunday being a big party night for those who were out, and it's never gone away even though the law has relaxed

Seems to make sense. More widely, it made the Taffies mad for illegal drinking in general - pubs are expected to have "stop ons" on a regular basis, which is a right PITA for the publicans but they've got no choice if they want to keep their custom. Our local used to do it at least 3 times a week

I can't think of a restrictive drinking law that HASN'T backfired tbh - it never works, from prohibition in the US giving a massive leg-up to organised crime, to dry Sundays in Wales creating a binge culture on a Sunday, to the "six o'clock swill" in Aus doing similar and having damaging effects on the distribution and type of pubs.

I just did a quick Google search - all over Sydney - Revesby Workers, Bankstown Sports, Penrith Panthers, Campbelltown Catholic, The Campbelltown club is the most restricted hours - 'ONLY' 10am - 4am, seven days a week, but closed on Xmas Day and Boxing Day. The other three are all open 9am - 6am, seven days a week. Bankstown Sports is open 365 days of the year.

Actually, anyone who is coming to NSW should join a club, I'm a member of Revesby Workers, one of the largest ones, and also UTS Rowers at Haberfield. I prefer going to inner city pubs but clubs are useful places too. When I put my car in for rego the other week in Hurlstone Park, I waited in Canterbury Hurlstone RSL, had lunch there, then just sat in one of the lounges. My sister in law and her daughter are both members of Panania Diggers so they can use the gym.

It is illegal to sell alcohol on Good Friday in QLD ,unless its in a pub/ restaurant and accompanied with a meal, Xmas day is the same. I guess its a bugger if it catches you out but most people stock up on the Thursady, hence the local BWS is packed out by 6.30pm,lol

If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place...
If you get a chance, take it, If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it would be easy they just said it would be worth it...
