Didn't emigrate as a single myself but wanted to say good luck and have fun with it all. Certainly sounds like you have an exciting time ahead of you and I think you'll have the time of your life. Are you emigrating for good? Or will you return to York eventually? I used to visit York all the time when I lived in the UK, often think if I ever returned it would be to there....

      It's hopefully a permenant thing ,

I have no ties what so ever in the uk , and its inevitable that i will in the future have emotional ties in Oz , dare i say it , meet a nice lass and have a family , Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek !!

although UK is my home , ive worked all over and lived around a lot of the uk in my youth , always got drawn back to york , its beautifull and i love everything about it . ill be giving Oz 110% and if it isnt what im expecting ( i have no illusions) ill still give it 4-5 years to make sure .

You'll be well established after four to five years and I think you can apply for citizenship after four years now? Yes, ahh York, maybe I'll go back for a visit soon.

      Hi Mr Fabricator,
We are from sunny Donny. Yes he is going over the same as you, he as been doing the same job for 17 yrs so should be easier enough to get a job. There is tons of jobs in fabrication work and the mines are always wanting people. Travelling sounds great and there will still be work in 2 yrs. My Craig as got his IELTS on the 14th Jan, booked up before that date. He is just gathering ref and paperwork for skills assessment for a 175 also. We want to validate and have a holiday in Victoria and Brisbane before he starts work if we gat a 175. He is 35 and agent says it should be a straight forward application, so just wait and see!!! We have 2 small children and cant wait to go over, much better place for them to grow up in and better job for hubby. Am hoping it will only take a year to get visa, can only hope!!!!

CP , always a spare room at my place if you wanna visit york and have free accomodation for a week ( or however long )

Louise , Im 36 and going the 176 SS route to WA im looking at roughly 12 months for visa and according to everyone the 176 can knock 6 months off the visa times

Mining is exactly what im going to look for , big companies , good pay , intewresting work and room to develope a career , That said my mate jhokes that ill be offered a maintainance and repair at the airport when i land and never get further than the customs desk ! haha Im realy open to jobs , i certainly wont settle for anything but i could end up anywhere :-) Oh what an adventure

i appreciate your input with regards to a start point , the way i see it is if i start at Sydney ,i wouldnt want to run out of steam by the time i start to creap up the side of WA , Id love to start and finish at perth so i can say ive done the whole country :-) also this would mean i got the far north and the hardest part of the journey over with straight away . id also love to spend Xmas 2012 in sydney , on bondi , dont know why but think it would be a great story for my mates back home , starting at Darwin would mean i have 2-3 months to get to sydney for xmas

U say buy cheeper in smelbum , or sydney , relativly speeking how much am i going to save on a camper from there , Im fortunate and have upto $40,000 to spend on a camper , itll be home for upto 2 years quite possibly .

Last question for you bob , When im done im going to be looking at chasing employment and a career in the mining industry , any advise , Im a sheet metalworker by trade and considerably experienced working remotly and in tough conditions , fabrication and welding and boiler maker also come within my remit . i also have experience and qualifications in general construction and demolitions ( im a ex royal engineer to paint u a picture ,)

      Thanks again to all .

Mate, from Port Hedland (pop 14,000) to the next town, Broome, (pop 11,500) is 612 MILES...about the same distance as from Portsmouth to Inverness...

When you get to the Sandfire Roadhouse, spare a thought for me, hey? I was in the original survey team on that road in Nov/Dec 1965... No, there was no "Sandfire" just a white saltpan 50 miles long and 2 miles wide.

Just asking out of curiosity. Is there any way for the pampered, studious, geeky types to join in on the mining goldrush? Someone who's been reading and typing too much so is no good with the hands when it comes to using screw drivers, pliers, welders etc., but is willing to make a start!!! Where would this start be made? Through a TAFE course???

At times i feel this is a bonus as everything to do with the process is what i want to do , certainly no arguments about wich state to go to or the other half hetting cold feet .

Occasionally im a little down because it would be totally amazing to share this experience with someone

Anyway , couples and families obviously need to sort out a home sooner rather than later , take care of the kids , school etc , get jobs as soon as possible to bring the money in and then hopefully settle into the new life .

As a single chap im sort of the opposite end of the scale , Ive worked hard all my life ( im 36 BTW ) and when i cash in my UK life im going to use it as a once in a life time opportunity , with no commitments for the first time in 20 years , bank ballance in the black and no fixed abode im going to take 6 - 12 months out and tour OZ before getting back to reality and settling into WA ( i picked WA for work in the mines , 2 weeks on and a week off will suite me , and its pretty good pay , plus its probably very similer to my old job wich will be a good rourtine for me )

Getting a camper , starting in Darwin and going around clockwise , finishing up Geraldton area maybe a little further north ( is exmouth north of geradlton ?? ) Time and funds allowing i may start at perth and again go clockwise finishing in pereth 12 months later :-)

What are your "single " plans , straight into work , tour a little , do u want to get stuck straight in , are you daunted by the fact youyr on your own , are you making decisive plans or just going to take it as it comes ??????

      Thoughts and comments welcome .

I could think of numerous other countries far more appropriate for a single man than Australia.
Although saying that travelling from Darwin down the West Coast is a decent road trip. Perhaps if a little younger and on the backpacker circuit would have been a whole lot more fun in another way.
Lots of single men in the mines for sure but at the same time a distinct lack of women as well.
You could always do Asia on weeks off,as a number do.lol
Coming as a single man to Perth around your age I found it far from ideal. This being very much a family city there is only limited outlets for single men, in the case of meeting women being a priority for you.
