Seatbelts in cars - Legitimate or nanny state - Nanny State
Helmets for motor bikes - Legitimate or nanny state - Nanny State

I'd take away those obligations as long as the 'non-user' paid extra insurance. I don't want to pay the extra health care costs for someone's stupidity when they suffer worse injuries than necessary.

Make some dangerous drugs illegal but not others - Legitimate or nanny state - Depends upon the wider effects to the community, not just the user.

Decriminalising currently illegal drugs isn't going to increase the number of drug users, if people want to use drugs they can get them now easily enough. The illegal status only criminalises hundreds of millions of people in the world, makes drug dealers very rich, and diverts police and courts away from real crime. It would reduce the need for addicts to commit crime to pay for their drugs, assuming that they would be cheaper if suppliers didn't have to go to such lengths to import them, or bribe law enforcement and customs services in that process. Plus drugs wouldn't be adulterated by poisonous substances so dealers can increase their profits.

All in all, decriminalisation would have beneficial effects on users and the community.

I have friends living in Lisbon, tell me the scheme is working well. Prohibition just does not work. In the US the private prison companies pay their lobbyists huge amounts to pressure for maintaining and extending drug laws. And in the UK, according to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8640399.stm

"Each new prison place costs £170,000 to build and maintain, and the cost per prisoner per year is £41,000." I'm not convinced its worthwhile keeping the drug laws and incarcerating people at this cost while the NHS is being cut, school building programs cut, pensioners' heating allowance cut.

      Interesting article on the subject..

Didn't want to derail the thread or anything. Never happened on PIO before surely.

Radio 5 Live for me. Feet up, nice bottle of red. Black Stump from S.E. Australia courtesy of my wine club delivery yesterday. I'd take a draw to be honest. Just glad Luis is playing. YNWA.

Haven't you got a pub handy with Sky, Steve. They are quite pleasant places now they have banned smoking!!!

I tried to fall asleep listening to the cricket but even that did not work! So I got up to watch the game. This is one of those where I'd really like both teams to lose but I do at least have a soft spot for Liverpool!

It's against the law to ride a bike without wearing a helmet in NSW but the police admit that they do not prosecute many cyclists for this and other infractions like going through red lights and cycling on the pavement. With no registration required it is difficult to identify them so that will be top of my next 'nanny state' wish list.

The odd thing about cycling is that I can understand why some people don't like wearing helmets and some people do but there is also a third group who ride with their helmets hanging off the handlebars. I guess this is a measure of their 'cool' but I think it's like having unprotected sex with a condom hanging around your neck.

1-0 Liverpool! Having perused the league table, I think it's in Spurs' interests for Liverpool to win to put all three on 22 points.
