Moving to Brisbane in 2-3 months... advice please!!

Hi every1!

I am new to all this so bear with me.

Been offered a job in Brisbane City Centre as an Insurance Underwriter (same job as I do in UK). I am 90% sure I am going to take it but just have a few questions before I go for it. Will be coming over with my girlfriend who'll be obtaining a 12 month working VISA.

1. Which suburbs are the best to live in? I'm 25 so would like a few pubs and nice places to eat nearby!
2. I'd be looking to rent initally, what kind of cost would we be looking at?
3. My girlfriend will be going over without a job, would she find employment fairly easily? She has a project admin background.
4. What are electric, gas, phone, council tax, water, tv licence, satellite TV costs?
5. I am a massive football fan, is it possible to get satellite TV that shows English football live? (that would be a MASSIVE bonus!!!)
6. What is nightlife and eating out like in Brisbane?

Sorry for so many questions but its a pretty big move to make!

Any other comments on Brisbane would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

Australia does not really like football and I miss it big time.....ossie rules football is really a stupid game that YOU WILL not enjoy watching if you love footy...I just watch it on the net even though the quality is poor.

hi ya, will try and help with your questions!
first of all you can get foxtel put in (like sky) and you can watch football live, although you might have to get up at 3,4,or even 5 in the morning to watch it!! depends what time its on in uk! but i have 2 man utd fans here so they have been known to get up that early to watch it!
if you want all the pubs etc, you will be better off staying as close to the cbd as possible, but that will make renting pricey, girlfriend should get a job with no problems,
hope this helps a little,

sheena

Fortitude Valley seems to have the majority vote for nightlife/eating out in brissy ,everyone heads for there,be warned weekends can be a bit chaotic according to the press!!.As sheena says rentals will be abit more expensive as your in the city. You would be better finding a suburb you like nearby and commuting on the train.
In a rental property you will only have to pay your elec ,telephone/internet and foxtel, the landlord pays the rates.
SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site or alljobs.com should show you whats about job wise for your girlfriend, theres plenty about so dont think youll find it much of a problem.
hope this helps

Great. Cheers for that info.

Another thing. My girlfriend will be obtaining a working holiday visa. She is a little concerned on how long this will take to be processed. We naturally want to travel over together but wonder if delays will mean I have to go alone before she gets the visa.

Any way Visa's can be fast-tracked? If so, how much does this cost?

So excited about having this opportunity, just want to make sure we've covered everything. Its a long way from Blackpool, Lancs!

Thanks for all your help so far.

Working Holiday Visa

I applied for a working holiday visa and it came through within a month, but I am a nurse so that may have sped up the process. But be warned it cost me £90 for visa, £70 for chest xray and £200 for medical.
I'm from blackpool. Small world. I'm off to Brisbane on 18th August and can't wait.

Hi

Thanks for the info.

My girlfriend got her Visa granted within 2hrs! No need for medical or anything?! She is only 19 so that may be the reason?

From Blackpool eh? Very small world!

I am getting a Company Sponsored Visa so think I'll need a medical? Hopefully won't need to pay for it but we'll see as the Visa process takes shape.

Are you going over with family or a partner? Have you decided on the Suburb you'll be living in yet?

Brisbane looks amazing doesn't it!

Scott

That's good. Must be cause I'm a nurse. You probably will need a medical but if your being sponsored then it should be paid for.
I'm going on my own. Don't know anyone out there either. Thinking or South Brisbane, Kangaroo point. There is a good website Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au has buying, renting and sharing properties on it. From what I can gather though it's a bit expensive to buy but there are some reasonable renting, I'm gonna share though cause I don't know anyone.
Where bouts you live in Bpool? I'm in Bispham.
When do you think you'll be going?

It's a big step to take on ur own, every credit! I live in North Shore (just near Uncle Tom's). Think we'll be heading over early-mid September. Thanks for the link, will check that out now. What is the pay like for nurses over there? Do you have a job to go to when u get there? How much you thinking of saving up and are u looking to get a property sorted b4 u get there?

Oh right. Nurses get about the same but cost of living is cheaper and better life. I haven't saved anything up really. trying to put money aside from wages but not much. I am selling my car and motorbike though so that will go towards moving. You'll have to message me when you get over there if your going to Brizzie. We can go out for a drink. That's why I'm gonna share cause it'll be easier makig friends. You going permenentley? I'm just going for 12 months. Your GF can apply for a second working oliday visa before that one runs out if you stay for longer.
