Really Paul should have the honour to promote the SES and RFS first because it was his initiative but in the interest of bumping the thread, I would like to promote being a Lifeline telephone counsellor. There are Lifeline offices all over Australia and they provide a 24 hour telephone counselling service for people who are feeling suicidal or even just in need of some "counselling". There are also peripheral volunteer opportunities depending on the state - in ACT here we also have volunteers who run the most amazing bookfair in Australia (plug!!!!) which runs for 3 days and sells thousands of donated but high quality books at really cheap prices. If anyone is in Canberra and is interested in being a telephone counsellor or a Bookfair volunteer, please pm me and I can send you details.

No I think it is a Canberra thing - we have one twice a year and next one is in September - will definitely give a plug closer to the date because this is going to be a 4 day whopper - our 40th anniversary one I think! A must for any bibliophile!
