Smile Canberra advice

Hi,

We are considering going to Canberra for a time between 1 and 3 years (depending on employment contract). So, we will be renting. We would like some advice on the best place to live in Canberra for a family where the 2 parents work , with one child at the primary school and a baby. We are not fussy. But we will be looking for the cheapest rent we can get on the best area of the city - like a 2 bedroom house, open plan, single garage, nice outdoor space, nothing luxurious but clean and in good repair, sort of cheap and chearfull kind of place - nice views would be a bonus. We are also very keen in avoiding any Bible belt. We just want a place where neighbours are civilized., welcoming and easy to get on. Priorities are good school and easy access to the city centre. We would be grateful if we could also get some advice on childcare, buying or renting a car and entertainment. We heard a lots of good things about Canberra, but we are a bit skeptical. It seems to good to be true. What are the cons in Canberra?

Cons in Canberra? Hmmm let me think Ah, we dont have a beach! But we do have several lakes so that sort of makes up for it!

Your question is actually incredibly difficult to answer! So in very general terms - Canberra covers quite a distance - think it is about 60km from one end to the other give or take a few m, However, in real terms, nowhere is really very far from anywhere else and Civic (the main centre) is only about 35 km from anywhere else and if you can avoid the REAL rush hour traffic then it never takes very long to get anywhere. I live very close to Civic and can get down to Banks in about 35 minutes on a good day and that is about as far South as you can get.

So, bottom line, anywhere is going to be reasonable in terms of access. Which town centre did you mean? We have 5 of them, the main one being Civic which is the oldest one. Generally with housing, the oldest suburbs are closer to Civic but the downside is that the houses are generally 30s, 40s and 50s so can be small but on big blocks or the old houses have been demolished and brand new apartment blocks have replaced them. The further out you go, the houses get newer and bigger and the blocks get smaller. The best place to look for rentals is here. The only suburbs I would avoid would be Charnwood, Richardson and some parts of Narrabundah although some parts of almost any suburbs can be a bit iffey. No bible belty areas to speak of! Unfortunately, cheap rents and best areas are not words that go together in the same sentence!!!

Most schools are just fine but I would be happy to pm you about what to avoid - not going to do it on a public forum. Childcare - can be a bit tricky to find. The baseline is apparently about $320 per child per week in the Civic area but if you have PR then there are government subsidies depending on your income which brings it down a bit.

Canberra tends to be a bit insular and although people are generally friendly they are not the "come over to dinner" all the time type people. It is quite easy to get into social groups though especially through the workplace.

Buying a car - you are spoiled for choice, we have hundreds of used car lots as well as a weekly private market out at one of the fruit markets at the weekend. New cars are very easy to come by. Petrol is getting up around the $1.40 - $1.50/l mark at the moment so something economical is probably going to be the order of the day - living in Canberra it is unlikely that you are going to need a big SUV gas guzzler unless you fancy taking off to the bush every weekend.

Thank you

Quoll,

Thanks for all the info. I would be grateful if you could PM about the schools to avoid. Just another question. If you were in the situation I described, which place would you choose to live in Australia? (Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne or other?).

Cheers,

All depends on the job you do really but given a choice I would pick Canberra any day of the week. It isnt the HUGE big city environment but it is bigger than a country town. It is as good a place as any to bring up kids - lots of opportunities and facilities. The climate is pretty good, we have 4 distinct seasons and though it can get chilly in winter, the sun always shines and it isnt miserable. House prices are generally cheaper than the bigger cities but they are getting up there. Unemployment is at an all time low here at the moment which is good. For me it is a nice cross between a big city and a country town - you can see the bush from anywhere in town and there is a lot of open space (which should be green but due to the drought is now a sort of dirty browny greeny colour) It is a 3 hour drive to Sydney which is definitely do-able for a long day or a more easy weekend, a couple of hours from some very nice beaches and about 7 hours drive or 1 hour flight from Melbourne.

If I didnt need a job and just wanted a self sufficient type lifestyle then I would head off to somwhere like Orbost in the east of Victoria - cheap houses, close to the sea etc but no jobs.

Canberra

Hi
The other points to make are:
- The Canberra winters are freezing and you will be back scraping ice off the windscreen in the morning.
- There is a very limited public transport system and few taxis, which makes going out at the weekend expensive
- Canberra locals are a bit insular.

Good luck anyway!

LOL quite right but the government did allocate quite a bit for the public transport in the budget the other day (not holding my breath though that it will make a huge difference). Oh and bring one of those natty little credit card scrapers for the ice on the windows - thank goodness for our new garage after donkeys years of scraping!!! The other thing is that in the winter the airport can get fogged in which is a real P*I*T*A especially as we are flying out for a holiday home in July.

Hi I arrived from uk 2004 and whilst I live in sydney, we wanted to live in Canberra, but hubbies job was here. My parents and brother live in Canberra - Kaleen, and love it. There is also an estate about 40 mins outside canberra called Murrumbateman - lovely houses on acreage - rather cheap - tanked water, this is where we wanted to live. Look at Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au for both rental and sale properties to giv eyou an idea. Kaleen - preoperties seem to go quickly and are sought after. Although we are not a religious family my brothers kids have all gone and little ones continue to go to Catholic schools - he feels in that area they are much better, but each to his own. (My kids in sydney go to public school).
Hope this helps,
