hi you lot in oz

hi guys, i am a hairdresser coming to oz in july. Just want to know what the hairdressing is like. I have been freelance for 10 years and i def do not want to work in a salon, mayb start a new bussiness there. What do you guys do and do you tend to go in the city. Hopefully i can gather people around the subburds to have there hair done. Worried about my hair as my friend puts colours in my hair every 4 weeks.
ps, very fussy
thanks

Hi Nicky, I think that the standard of hairdressing is ok, had my hair cut and coloured here. Obviously, there's salons in the city but also most suburbs have their own little shopping centres and there's at least one salon in each I would guess - the one near my has 2 plus a barbers. I'm sure there are mobile hairdressers

Hi Nicky,
The standard of hairdressing seems dam good to me here in on - havent had any disasters yet - and they actually listen - when you say take just the ends of thats what they do not like back in the uk and you say take just the ends of and they chop off about 3 inches !!!
we have heaps of hairdressers around our way - in the local shopping center there must be at least 10 - thats without all the smaller one man band type hairdessers.
good luck

I must agree with Ali all the suburbs have hairdressing and beauty salons not just the city.It may be worth getting on with salon just for 6 mths or so to get your name known and then going solo, most salons you see advertise for staff so i dont think you will struggle getting work ,good luck

Hi Nicky,

There must be about 10 hairdressers in my local shopping centre, physically they vary a lot - half of them look like Barbers shops - very basic but aren't barbers, with a couple looking really smart. In our shopping centre they are open 7 days a week and a lot of people just walk in and get their hair done without having an appointment, its quite off putting as everyone shopping can see you having your hair done

The one I went to, all the staff seemed in their early 20's and I felt quite scared sitting there wondering what on earth my hair was going to look like when I came out - just had some foils. they did an ok job but I'm going try somewhere a bit smarter looking next time!!

I don't think you'll have any trouble finding work in a salon, not sure about starting your own business where we are because there seems to be a complete overload of salons - it depends where you're gonna live!

Liz
