40+ with teenages...

If you come to Oz and are 40+with teenagesIt is normal for them to hate you but in a short space of time they will settle down and at least they can hate you with the sunshiningand you can escape to the beach.
Found a great way to make new friends is to start a new hobbie.I took up quilting 4 yrs ago and now teach it.Used to be a nurse and life realy dose start at 40.

The boys are now young men two live in the city with there partners and the youngest one known as Pom still lives at home!He is more Ozzy than Pom with a great life to look forward to and has a great social life.

Moving here was traumatic as we left one son in the u.k who is now married we missed going to his wedding and yes we miss him everyday but lifes too short to look back so try new things and dont look back just forward.

If your on a tight budget remember the time will come when there will only be the two of you and you can explore Australia with out the moan of are we there yet!
Our eldest and his wife are now touring Africa,India and next month Asia after selling there home, bikes cars and arrive for a 6 week stay before going back to the u.k.with jobs waiting but living with the in laws till they buy another house!

We havent been togeather as a family for 4 yrs so yes this Mum is doing the full Christmas tree ,dinner plus BBQ's and family birthday party to make up for lost time togeather.Who knows in time they may yet come to Oz! So hope this helps any other mid life mom's.:)

Hi..what a great post for anyone who is moving out with teens..very positive!..i'm a mid life mum with three grown up children plus a late aussie arrival (big surprise for us, but great!) who has just started in primary.. i know what it's like to take your family on this adventure, and how the family unit changes quickly as they start their own lives..to hear that your family has survived the big move and done well, i'm sure will help those who are taking their families out to Aus..well done..

Hi Jennifer,
I loved your post. I am 40 my OH 44 and we will be bringing one 17 yrs old and possible later on another teenager and am worried about how to handle their emocions aswell as my own and trying to keep the family from falling apart. We all know how hard on everybody its going to be and we have all talked about it at length but talking and doing are different things aren't they. But the reason for the move is for a better future for all of us in particular the kids they are nearing adulthood and the UK is really going down hill and i see only struggle ahead for them. It was nice to read your thread it give us all hope that it is do-able and in the end it's all for the best. We just wish we were there doing it already we do wish we had done this years ago, i think it gets harder when the kids are older when they are small they just adapt to there surrounding faster. We feel we are on a tight timeline we are worried that if we wait too long the boys will get seroius with a girl and not want to come. Race against time or a race againt Testostorone anyway!!
Kind Regards Alison x

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for the post it is very reassuring to hear that you have survived the whole process of emigrating with teenagers.........

I am going to be 40 on 3rd June 2008, and I am really looking forward to it.......NOT

My children will be 19,17 and 13 when we come over to Oz in September, I know it might not be a bed of roses for the children at first, but I'm hoping it will be for the best in the long run.

Our house in full of mixed emotions at the moment, we had our visa granted last week and up until then my son Bradley was very eager, now that reality has set in and our flight is booked,he isn't so sure.

Thanks again

April

Hi,
Great to hear you have the visas.

As for the teenages and yourselfs you will find it hard when you arrive. It is nothing like the u.k and about 20 yrs behind the times!
You realy must live in an area that is near the city.Schools are basic and if you have had the kids in church schools ,here it is classed as private so you pay fees. All ours were in grammer school back home so it was a hell of a shock!
All the kids are o.k now but it took 2 yrs for the middle son to accept living here.As for me it has taken 4 yrs and been up and down but we will not go back to the u.k.Try and make friends with other poms and every weekend go out somewhere new.
As for crime it happens here but dosent get to the newspapers!Things to bring out m&s knickers ,bras and underpants. The ozzy underwear is badly sized and poor quality.
Germoline cream great for mossy bites. And if you like bread sauce here the english lolly shops sell it at $9.00 a pkt!
Kids if you like chocolate it tastes different here! Also they do not do prawn cocktail crisps much to my youngest sons disgust...
Dont bring loads of english summer cloths as they are too heavy and cloths are very cheap here.
I am sure that in time you will settle but it realy dose take time.We have known friends go back after 2 yrs only to come back again.Realy 4 yrs is when you think like an Australian!
Any help we can give we will.
All the best Jen.

Hi Jennifer, i was very relieved to read your post. I am 51 and i have a 28 year old in sydney already. She has been here for 16 months and will not be coming back to the UK. We also have 24 year old daughter and a 20 year old son. My son does not want to move to Australia but my daughter does when she finishes university in 3 years. We have just made the decision to emigrate to Sydney and the thought of leaving 2 of my children behind is awful. Either way though i will not have all of them in the same country. I have been fretting about this for weeks but now i feel much better. I was wondering if there are any people moving to oz in my age bracket and wondering if they feel as terrified but excited as i do. My OH is younger, he is only 42. Probably going on his visa.

hi there

Hi Jenny, we are hoping to move to Sydney as that is where our daughter. We have only just started the process. As i am 51 my husband will have to be the main applicant. His job is not on the skills in demand list so he can't get enough points on a skilled visa. We will try the state sponsorship probably. I have contacted several agencies to see if any hospitals will sponsor me with a 457 visa but they say the cut off age for that visa is 46 so no good there. I would like to be in oz by next christmas but who knows when we will get there. If all else fails, my daughter can sponsor us as she is applying for permanent residency.

Rosie

Hi all,
Great thread, wehave the same issues with teens ,one 18 one 15 an one nearly thirteen. We are moving to the Brisbane area when school finishes here, sometime around August.
My youngest is well up for the move, so is my 18 year old (although the latter could change his mind in an instant) . The 15 year old already hates us for moving him away and has been against the idea ever since we told them we were thinking about it, almost two years ago now.
I do feel for him ,he has told us he will be moving back here as soon as the first oppertunity arises.
I just hope that Australia will change his mind for him.

Pete and Wendy
