Books in Australia

Has anyone else noticed that books are really expensive here? Nearly $30, I'm gutted I used to buy a new book every week out of Tesco but I'm not handing over $30 here every week. I wonder how much room my Mum has in her case..........................

Depends where you shop and believe me it is worth shopping!

KMART and BIG W and TARGET all do new books from 15$-25$

Books

Not sure if books are more expensive, but as a bookworm I find the libraries here are infinitely better than those in the UK. I belong to three different librarries in Sydney and I'm able to get a lot of the latest releases on reservation soo after publication. They are also great for kids books (never had to buy a Harry Potter!)

since being here in oz, we have brought books from amazon.com which is a cheap place to shop
but like johatts said - kmart target and big w have books & new releases cheap and even sometimes dymocks have cheap bargains, in alot of the shopping malls they also have discounted book stores

dymocks have a 20% off day once or twice a year, on all titles except reference-think next one will be in Jan. we use The Book Depository - Cheap books with free delivery worldwide !!! which does free post to OZ and matches amazon prices or better.it is really good for reference/academic and unusual titles as well as kids books. prices depend on exchange rate though unless youve still got uk account and its no good at mo

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm just such a lazy person. Think I'll join the local library, seems like a good idea and next time I go to Big W or Target will need to remember to look at the books. Its just that they have so many other nice things to buy............ I'm a bit sad I know but here talks a girl from the country who only had a Tesco and Woolworths to spend her money in!!!

Cheers everyone

I tend to get my new books from Target and K Mart, but there's also a brilliant little book exchange in our shopping centre

Books has been one of my major worries about Oz! .... dont get me wrong I know there are lots there! ... LOL! ...but I too am used to picking up a book a week from the supermarket and I order many from Amazon (though never enough!)... we have 6 bookcases of books to bring with us ... and I am stock piling as many as possible un-read to bring with us!

I am leaving my kids behind ..(28yrs & 23yrs) ... dont ask me to leave my books as well!
