Hear! Hear! Thank you OldPom for sharing your story, I did suspect there was one there worth hearing, so we appreciate you sharing it with us.
Living in a foreign country is rarely the easy-peasy escape from a ho-hum (whatever) life that so many seem to imagine or dream, or perhaps even, expect; as your experiences truly demonstrate. I think it also shows, that one of the most vital personal attributes to successful migration is Flexibility, which was pivotal to your success & your family's well-being, for Life threw you so many curved balls and unexpected challenges. It also helped that you had great tenacity, foresight and the ability to recognize an opportunity and pursue it, however far from your original intent it was; something we can all appreciate.
A truly inspirational Life: perhaps you will inspire and encourage others not to give up when their Dreams and aspirations seem to falter.
Thank you, & sincere best wishes to your family and continued success & happiness to you all,
Good post Oldpom. I've been here since 1966 and know only too well the ups and downs migrants can suffer. I'm glad your posts about the hardships have been better received than one that I made.

Where is your post Ellie2, can you post the link in case I've not read it?
Thanks,
Herbster
I always like to read real experiences, whatever they might be, to gain a clearer picture of Life in Oz - or anywhere, come to that! I hope things are looking up for you, Ellie, if things have been tough.

Brilliant post old pom, really love hearing any and all points of view about the big move (cept whiny ones but you're never that - as this post hammers home!!) - they're just so interesting

wow what a story, i have one sister (no brothers) she moved to perth last year and that felt awlful enough, but at least i can talk to her on the phone every week, i feel sick at the thought if anything happended to her, i cant begin to imagine how you all were feeling, and still feel. i understand your point though of sharing your past with us all. i regret how i was when i went to oz, always moaning that the baked beans didnt taste the same, where were the 'real pubs' were etc it puts things into perspective doesnt it? 7 years later and all i can think of was how amazing australia is and when i go back at xmas i will enjoy every day.
Got back from NZ last night. We'd planed to stay a few more days but number 3 son decided to come home for the weekend between working in Qld and the NT so naturally we wanted to see him. Of course as I type this he's off having breakfast with some of his mates and not actually being with us, but that's typical isn't it?
Thank you all for your responses. I'm sure most of you have the right attitude and Australia will be a better place for your contributions. Just remember, when you get out here, not all Aussies are positive so avoid them and look for ones who are.
I forget sometimes how polite Poms can be and I think some of you are trying to say, in the most polite way, that I can be a cranky old bugger at times. I'd agree with you there and so I'm sure would my family. Living in Australia knocks the corners off you pretty quickly and you get used to people telling it how it is. I'm just softening you up, lol.
Skip, you're right about young people wanting what it took us years to get, but I think our parents said the same about us. It all depends on what everyone else has and you never want to be the one who doesn't have it. I was once talking to an old bloke who said that as a boy he was never bought shoes. I asked him how that made him feel and he said it didn't matter because none of the other boys had shoes either. Interesting thought isn't it?
