Hello, we were in Oz for 4weeks over Christmas & the New Year. 2 weeks around Melbourne and the rest in Perth. We found the whole place to be brilliant, but for us Perth was the better. Maybe it was because we have relatives living there. Quality of life seems fantastic for my relations who emigrated 30 years ago. Work appears to be plentiful, particularly in the building trades, & the kids without doubt would have far better schooling facilities ( my relative is a deputy principle & showed us around her school), not to mention what they can do outside of school hours. My good lady was also mighty impressed but she likes her comfort bubble more than I do. Maybe all the constant bad weather, depressing news, & general malaise that surrounds the UK in most departments will give her the push that she needs.
My wife also works in social services as a qualified social worker, and my family in Perth reckon they are always in short supply so getting a job should not be as bad as some other occupations. I am also a CORGI engineer, but stick to the installation of gas fires & stoves. While we were there it seemed to me that even though they have hot summers they still require space heaters for the cooler months, so definately a market for me.?
Anyway it would definately be Perth for us!!

but with high house prices do you not think that adelaide may be better to bring a young family up. bigger houses more land. etc

Hiya Lazymazy,

We are hopefully heading out to Perth as we have friends there and the quality of life for a family seems to be fantastic! Our friends moved out there 3 years ago and have never looked back. They said that the first two years were the hardest but it has all worked out now and they are living life to the full! The photos that they send of blue skies, house with pool, healthy looking children just make you realise that it is the right decision to make.

My husband is also a gas engineer and earns very good money in the UK so this was one of our main concerns, can we achieve the same quality of life and little luxuries that we have here. Our friend has sent us a copy of the job paper and there must have been at least 30 jobs for plumbers/gas fitters and from what our friend has told us if you sub contract in Oz you can earn the same money as in the UK. He also said that he could get my hubby a job tomorrow so that was very reassuring :)

House prices have increased over the last 3 years in Perth but we have done alittle bit of research and spoke to our friends and we think that it is still quite reasonable considering the sizes of land and properties. You seem to get more for your money if you move at least half an hour drive outside of Perth!

Only you can make up your mind which destination you will choose but for us it would definately be Perth.

Good Luck
Julie & Ricky

perth or adelaide

hi there
We are also very puzzled on where to go now especially after watching down under, we origanally thought melbourne as we know people there, but we are quite solitary people used to living rurally, so adelaide looks ideal, but the real practical one would be perth as hubby is a brickie.
But having never been its hard to know which one, I have heard that its harder to find building work in melbourne & adelaide areas. At present we live in a small village but now children are getting older 12 & 14 it would be nice to live somewhere with more for them to do as at present i am the taxi when they need to do anything!
so we would like to hear of any any suggestions on any of these states and good areas in which to live (ideally edge of suburbs i suppose with things for the kids to do and scenery and stuff for the old farts!)
thanks a bunch
donna
