Reality for dogs in Melbourne
Posted 24-06-2008 at 08:08 PM by Scamp
hi - would really appreciate anyone commenting who has had experience taking their dog over from England to Melbourne. I have a great opportunity to emigrate and be a mature student - however my biggest mental hurdle is my lovely Cocker Spaniel who I would not on any account leave behind. I find I am more worried about him than myself as I think I have everything straight in my head regarding my own arrangements. I feel I am being cruel putting him on that long flight, am worried sick he'll die of dehydration (have already read some horrible stories on the internet) and cannot imagine what will happen in 30 days of quarantine. To add to this I'm now convinced he'll be bitten by a snake because being a Cocker he is forever sniffing into long grass and loves rivers or he'll eat a poisonous spider - something he is content to do with any insect in the UK and gets away with it. I am also concerned the summer will be too hot for him to do his normal activities such as long walks in the green countryside chasing rabbits and that he'll become a miserable shadow of his former self. I desperately need a reality check from people who have a similar type of dog (maybe a gundog) who can share their own honest experiences as this whole worry thing is keeping me stuck here looking at those spaniel eyes and feeling mighty guilty !!!
Thank you for reading this post - hope to hear.

Hi Scamp, Don't Worry, They Have Dogs In Australia Too. I Have Visited Friends And Family In Oz With Dogs And They Are Very Happy And Healthy. I Am Taking My Boxer Dog To Oz When I Go And Feel Just Like You Do About Him, No Way Is He Being Left Behind. He Will Be Going To Melbourne Too And From What I Have Been Able To Research, The Facilities Are First Class And You Can Visit Him Twice A Week If You Want. Hope This Helps To Reassure You That Other Pet Lovers Are In The Same Boat!

Hi Scamp!
We flew our 10 year old lab x border collie out to Melbourne in May. She spent 30 days at Spotswood quarantine and from what we can tell she had a ball. She was diagnosed with arthritis before we left England and was given medication. The quarantine people said they couldn't believe it as she was jumping around like a puppy and had no stiffness at all from the flight. I was really worried about her before we left and the whole time she wasn't with us but for no reason. We didn't visit quarantine at all as we didn't want to upset her when we left and felt it would just be for our benefit and not hers. It was really hard but we managed it. She has settled in really well, I think trip to beach on her first day here helped and she is now well and truly an aussie dog. Hope this helps! Emma |
