Aussie Arrogance
Posted 24-05-2008 at 10:52 PM by mpdbrit
I have lived in Australia for 9 years now and reside in Brisbane having migrated from the UK.
The most disappointing issue for me with Australia is the one-eyed arrogance of many Aussies and their ignorance to the rest of the word.
Many Aussies just do not like the English for no other reason than thats what they have been told to think from birth.
The media in Oz is extremely jingoistic , all you here continually on TV is Aussie this Aussie that to the point of being childish , I know we are in OZ but believe me they just go on and on like pumped up schoolboys.
This rubs off onto your average low intelligence Aussie and they just big mouth over anything and everything , they even twist history in their favour..according to the Aussies the British army are useless and incompetent ?? work that out.
Yes Australia has it's positive side , unfortunately the down side is the big mouth ignorant Aussie.

Puts you off wanting to live in Oz in the first place. I had heard auzzie's were very friendly but this is the second time in an evening I have found out this is not the case.

I have been her 39 years. The best way to handle the one eyed arrogant arsie, oops sorry! Aussie is the fast retort, the good old put down, the anti aussie joke, e.g. what do you call a field full of Aussies, answer, a vacant lot. Grow your own dope; - plant an Aussie. Tell them if you are a naturalised Australian, and say that to become so you had to have half your brain removed, so you donated it to make 2000 of them BAS***DS intelligent. Believe me its a lot of fun> Although it will not win you any Aussie friends; NO SENSE OF HUMOUR.

Hi mpdbrit, just on the subject of "aussie arrogance", I've been here for decades and have found that the average aussie is friendly, - the thing that rattles them is people criticising their country, which many newcomers do (of all nationalities). Some brits can come on with an air of superiority which is a red rag to a bull to most aussies. I've seen firsthand an immigrant (not brit) treated really awfully because they were on their high horse, picking holes in everything and making it quite clear they came from a much better place. Needless to say she was neither befriended by anyone nor liked, and must have been very miserable. Generally speaking Aussies are more than willing to give anyone and everyone a fair go, but they in turn want a fair go from newcomers. It's just an attitude thing, when the chips are down. Very best to you. Cheers, Liz

I lived in Queensland for 5 months last year before having to retutn to the UK and can honestly say i found the aussies very nice people. My husband worked in one of the mines and he made some really good mates.
