I have often posted to other peoples diaries on here but thought I would do mine! Even if I am the only one that may ever read it.
We landed here in Brissie on 9-2-05 after a hectic 6 months of paperwork and selling property. We went through all the same emotions that many of you have posted so I won`t go there again!
We landed in Brissie and were met by my cousin who livesin Paddington. We went back to her house, had a cuppa, dumped the cases and went straight out! After our 30 hour trip we were hyped up and excited!
By the end of our first day we had opened our bank account, bought a car and spoke to so many rellies that we have here.
A lot of my Mums family came out here as ten pound poms on the boat. They are settled in Melbourne in and around the Mornington peninsula.
We landed on the wednesday. On the THursday I was at the nursing agency signing paperwork and on the Friday I was at work! Talk about in at the deep end!
I work at a elderly care retirement village in Brisbanes west and am still there now. I was initially sponsored by an agency but 4 months in I was "bought out" by the home and given a permanent job!
We rented a house and bought new furniture and then got the rest of our shipment from the UK.
To jump forward a bit, After 18 months we moved into our own house! I had imagined us in a quirky Queenslander but hey, I fell in love with a red brick, and red roof detatched low set home.
Everyone has been out here to see us. OH Mum has been twice. OH Dad and stepmum been once. My parents have been once. I have a friend who visited whilst touring Oz. Family friends have also visited us!
The only sad part that I have found being here is when family are ill. My Nan passed away last year after a fight against ovarian cancer. She was my last Nanna left!
WHen she fell ill, the immediate instinct was to get on a plane and go but the practical (thank you Dad for that!) part of me says "what can you change by going?" I stayed in Oz and was kept up to date with more than 5 emails per day and regular calls. It was hard going and the day she died was hard too.
I am glad that she saw us settle here. She saw us start our new life and she had many letters from us. She loved to write "proper letters" - she could do emails but preferred to write!
We are going to celebrate our third Christmas here this year - something that I STILL cant get used to. Christmas in the sun. I was born on Christmas Day and it will always be weird now that I have a summer birthday!
Life in Oz is good, scratch that GREAT! We miss people, but not the place!

Oops - continued ...like mrs sykes I have followed your progress on PIO and have enjoyed your blog.
It is comforting for us back in UK to hear how happy you are and this helps us stay in touch with our dream of emigrating, as I am sure that you can remeber - it is quite traumatic !! Keep smilin' Ian & Claire |

I so agree with you...life in Oz is GREAT as the only thing I miss about UK is people NOT the place......
