Homesickness

Another diary moment where I need to scribble things down!!!Lots of people ask if we ever get homesick. We do NOT Miss the place at all! Dont get me wrong, we had a nice life in the UK but the main issue was that we "worked to live". We never had any time together and literally used to pass each other driving the opposite ways up the road!
We miss people. When we arrived here my other half was skeptical that I would settle as I used to have constant contact with my parents, aunt, uncle, cousins, Nanna on an almost daily basis!
I Settled brilliantly! I love my new life here. I missed people but had the thoughts that most of them had already bought tickets and planned to come and I would see them anyway!!
We received frequent emails from everyone and letters from family. However, for those of you here that think you dont or wont suffer from homesickness...................................... u will! You just learn to live with it!
Someone once told me that after 2 years all they wanted to do was go home! Ok, I am definately not there!!!! But I do miss people.
My husband asked me what I wanted for christmas and I said "Mum and Dad on my doorstep!" (There u go Caz! (mum) I do miss ya!!).
Its the stupid things that get you homesick....someones birthday and you cant get through on the phone. Christmas - opening pressys on webcam is NOT the same as being there. Feeling miserable and wanting to call home to UK, but you cant as it is 3am in the morning!!!!!!!!Hearing a song or seeing a movie that you know you should see with someone else (Dad - A few good men - I still havent watched it since you and me saw it before you left - Im waiting for you to come back!!!!!!!!!)
For all those of you that are having parental hassles cos u r leaving....try not to leave on bad times. Its like the song says "you dont know what you`ve got til its gone".
When famiy arent around you know how much you needed them, do need them and want them with you!!!
CazBeckham (Mum!) - I cant wait until you get out here! i know that I have always advocated patience while waiting for your visa but hell, waiting for yours is KILLING ME!!!!! I wish it would hurry up!!!!!!
The day you get off that plane with Dad will be one of the most special days of my life. I cant wait to hear you say "I live here!". I cant wait to go out for coffee with you. I cant wait to drink a cold beer with Dad. I cant wait to see Dad cooking on our barbie. I cant wait to go househunting, car shopping, boat shopping with you!!!!

So Mr Case Officer, Give my mum and dad their VISA cos I want them to be here as soon as possible!

Even after ten years I still get 'homesick' now and again. Often it will be little things that set it off - watching a British TV programme or hearing a familiar accent in the street. But I'm not sure if it is homesickness or nostalgia. I'm homesick for a place that doesn't exist any more. I miss the Yorkshire I knew in the 1980s - the last time I lived there. When I went back in April for the first time in many years it had changed dramatically. I sat in a Cafe Nero drinking some horrible coffee served by a nice young lady who sounded like she was from Russia or Poland. It was pouring down outside. I sat by the window and felt homesick for Australia.
An Italian Australian mate of mine said his uncles were the same - always moaning about Australia and talking wistfully about going back to their hometown near Genoa. Then when they went back for a visit they got a rude shock because Italy had moved on since the 1970s and they said it was just like Australia! One problem with homesickness is you tend to remember all the nice things and forget all the day to day frustrations and the real "heartsink" things that made you want to leave in the first place. The other problem is that if you do reasonably well here you can forget that Australia has given you opportunities that would not have had 'back home'. There's a danger of assuming that you could have an equally good life in the UK, but of course surrounded by your friends and family. A visit back to see how your old friends etc are struggling with daily life is a good cure for homesickness. |

Hey Jo! Have only felt homesickness once and it was the most awful gut wrentching feeling! I have just left family in UK and was definately the most hardest thing I have ever done - don't anyone underestimate it! Anyway, OH Aunt is in Brissie and says it took her 17 yrs to settle!! Said everytime she went back to UK for holiday would cry for 2 hrs on the plane and her family were with her in Oz!! I think its just everyone adapts differently and harder for some than for others - at least you have your mum coming out soon!! Look forward to meeting up at Labradour!! Nat x
