Where we’re at Autumn 08

I'm all excited today, me and MrMeg spent all morning seriously discussing and planning our finances. We have come to the realisation that we will probably have little or no equity in the flat by the time we plan to leave in September 2010 due to the crappy housing market, so we have 23 months to save as much money as physically possible! What we hope is that the housing market will have dropped and will then be beginning to recover, leaving us with our initial deposit of 15k, which we can then use as a deposit in oz.
So I transferred the balances of all my credit accounts onto a 15month 0% card, and have worked out that if I continue paying the amount I currently pay on these debts I will have at least halved them in 15months! So chances of having those debts gone by the time we go are very good!
We have come up with an extremely strict and detailed budget which entails very few luxuries for the next two years, but means we can put away £1000 a month. It’s going to be very hard, but in reality we live a very wasteful and unstructured life at present so its great to put an end to that and start being conscious of what we are spending our money on
If we manage to do that by the time we go we will have enough money for the move, 6 months rent and for a deposit for a small house, providing the housing market doesn’t let us down. (Jon just asked me what I was doing and I said I was writing my blog and he said “oh yeah, add this to your blog…” dropped his pants and shook his bum at me. So I have respected his wishes and added it.) If however the housing market does let us down we will have enough cash to still make the move and rent for a while, whilst we rent the flat in the UK out waiting for the market to pick up again.
So I am feeling very positive.
It’s crazy though, because last year if you had said to me “you could halve your debts in 15months” I would have laughed and thought it was pointless because 15months is a lifetime away! But now even 23 months seems to be very very soon! It’s a scary thought to think of what we have to achieve in just under 2 years, but very exciting at the same time! It’s so great to have something to aim for, and a reason to stop living like wasters. The reality is that we earn quite a lot of money, but we never see it because most of it goes towards paying interest on our debts and the rest is wasted on takeaways and **** we don’t need.
I’m sitting here at my desk wearing 2 jumpers and a scarf because I have set myself the aim not to turn the heating on until November! Another attempt to save money, and the planet! Being freezing cold just makes me even more motivated to get to Kiama as soon as possible!!!

I admire your attitude - get up and go rather than roll over and moan! I also admire Mr Meg's attitude - surely there's a way he could earn extra money with his 'bum waving' skills!!!!
