Walking Shoes

Unless you're going to be doing some hiking out in the bush, a decent pair of trainers or tennis shoes will probably suffice. Get good quality ones and they'll last for years too.

You don't have to pay a fortune either if you can find a factory outlet type of retailer. Luckily we have a few in Melbourne that I go to.

If you are venturing into the bush or Alpine areas, then you'll benefit from a sturdy leather boot that snakes can't bite through. [emoji3]

Any sports shoe store should have lots to choose from: ask them for a walking not a running shoe.

I bought a pair of Brooks similar to this about 6 years ago and they are still going strong after lots of wear:

Merrell, Asics, New Balance are other well known brands which do women's walkers.

Just thought to add: if you are going to be walking a lot in warm weather it would be good to get a type with a more open mesh on the top to keep your feet cool.

I have a pair of trainers that are brilliant, they are supposed to be running shoes but I haven't used them for that haha. They have really good support, really comfy and they are airy too because they have the mesh. I was thinking of just getting another pair of those. I don't want too many shoes especially ones I won't wear much

Get them before you leave. Think trainers are blooming pricey here. Once here for casual its thongs all the way :)

I discovered Sketchers Go Walk a year or two ago. Not suitable for bush walking, but iotherwise versatile and if you want something comfortable for city exploration on foot, then a good option in my view. They are also extremely light, I always bring them on holiday now.

My Adidas Gazelle. These do everything, in the fashionable green and gold of Australia too!

Haggis the chocolate Lab occasionally likes to nibble them too.

I read that as "Haighs" the chocolate lab - and thought - must be someone who's lived in South Australia!

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good pair of walking shoes or trainers. I'm obviously going to be walking a lot. I do walk a lot now but I tend to wear stupid shoes(daytime shoes, pumps) and have no idea where to start looking or what to look for.

Tbankkkks :)

You can get a good pair of walking boots from sports direct. They won't last, but they will be comfortable. If you are getting serious, then its worth finding a specialist shop, or even buying online if they have a good exchange system. Fit is important. Don't forget socks, and think about insoles.

I got some North Face hedgehogs for hill walking and they are really comfortable, plus much lighter and easier to carry than hiking boots whilst still being very supportive.

I wouldnt go full hiking boots unless i was intending to hike a long distance trail with full backpack.

I love merrils but the vibram soles are a bit soft for everyday concrete use, i wear through them too quickly. They have great purchase on slippery rock though.

I would buy a pair of Salomon GTX 2s if i was coming over from the uk. In fact, the last three times the PIL have come over, the Salomons (and a bottle of single malt) are the things they have packed for me. They make their own soles that have good purchase on slippery ground, but can handle miles on the concrete too. They are light but wont fall apart either. Ive even played tennis and soccer in them on occasions. Im very hard on shoes and wearing them virtually every day, they would last a year.

The trouble with trainers is they're pretty unattractive! Have you looked at Sketchers Go Walk? They've got a trainer-like sole but they don't have laces and the front is a bit lower cut, so they look OK with skirts etc.

A bit pricey but you might be able to track down a cheap version online.

I'm only 5ft 3 and when I wear trainers with skirts or shorts, it looks awful - my legs look about 3 inches long. I think it's the fact that the trainers come right up to the ankle. I find something like skate shoes or the Skechers, which don't come quite so high on the foot, look slightly better (though nothing will really give me long legs, LOL).

I do lots of walking, some on paved footpaths and lots of bushwalking on uneven ground. I have some North Face Hedgehogs which I love. I use orthotics which I can easily fit in the shoe. Those are probably my favourite shoes (I am a bit of a tomboy jeans/t-shirt sort of girl anyway). The others I wear most are Merrell Pace Glove 3, which have a barefoot sole. They have a really thin sole and are very 'grippy' but aren't so good in the wet/cold or if it is particularly rough under foot. I have tried regular trainers for walking, but I don't find that they have enough grip. We do geocaching, so we often walk off trails which can involve climbing and bush bashing, so I like shoes with a bit of grip. You would be best to go into a specialist shop and ask them to point you in the right direction.

I walk a lot and in the Summer I wear Meindl sandals and in the winter I have been wearing Meindl walking shoes but this year trying Salomon (cheaper than the Meindls). I went into Meindl because my son suggested them as he was wearing them on deployment and I must say I have been very happy - I have broad feet so Merrils (which took my eye) are cut a tad too narrow.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with them but I walk 7-10 miles most days and need to ensure comfort so I dont mind spending a lot on my feet but if you are just going to potter about then a pair of trainers will probably do just as well. My only beef with the Meindls is that they only do around 1500 miles before I wear the soles out and they dont have repairable soles. Otherwise they're fabulous.

Go to a bushwalking shop (we have Open Air here which are excellent and have a good range) and see what fits your feet with socks on. I've always found that if they slip on like a glove then they're going to be good.

I do loads of walking too. Mostly on paved paths rather than bush walking.

I hate trainers and any kind of athletic shoe. I've been wearing Sperry Angelfish boat shoes for years. They come in a zillion varieties of colour and material, they super comfy but - most important of all - they're low-cut at the front so they look OK with shorts (or skirts, if you must). I order them online from the US and the last pair I bought (over two years ago) are still going strong with almost daily wear.

I buy most of my shoes from Kathmandu:

http://www.kathmandu.com.au/womens/footwear/boots.html

They may seem a little expensive but you get what you pay for (i.e.) hard wearing, long lasting and very comfortable

I get a casual hiking boot.

There is a proper name for it but I cannot remember the name.

Which means I wear it every day around the streets in Sydney, I wear them to work, I wear them to pubs to see bands, plus I can use them for bush walking and gentle hiking if need be.

My most recent boot from them, I have been wearing at least eight hours a day, every single day, since March 2015. And they still look like brand new. Amazing.

If walking around the outback, I would advise NOT to wear shoes with laces due to small, spikey grass seeds penetrating the laces and fingers getting splinters when unlacing the shoes.

Personally, I use Woolies/Coles $5 slip ons, very comfortable and they grip over rocks, grass etc. Jo wears a pair of tennis shoes (pumps).

Take a look at New Balance. They are the only shoes I buy. I have extremely wide feet and many/most of their models come in various widths, for people with slim or wide feet they are the best fitting shoes out there. Get a proper measurement and see what size you really are (I'm a US size 7.5, but for years I thought I was an 11, because anything smaller wouldn't go on my foot)
