SalParadise
Hello there, I'm Brian, this is my first post on this forum so excuse me if I don't follow a certain 'secret code' etiquette. I'm not here to debate and stuff. Anyway, sorry about that ? the main and original point in my post was: Me and my mate are going to move to Australia for 12-24 months and will hopefully have the time of our lives, right! We're both 27 year old guys, your casual Glasgow kind of guys. I'm taking £5000 and I think that works out around $9000aus. We both intend on getting into work pretty much as soon as we can, and will hopefully soak up Melbourne before heading anywhere. Of course these plans are only just that and it'll no doubt change. But I was wondering what the work situation is like in Melbourne in January? Or anywhere else in Australia? We also also really want to get a decent vehicle for hitting the road! What's best practice for this? Any advise that could be passed our way would be fantastic. I guess my main questions would be: 1. Could you recommend a good hostel? 2. Is €5000 enough security for starting a WHV year in Australia? 3. What's it like out there just now doing the backpacking/WHV thing? Thanks for reading and hopefully will see a few good replies ? Guest51810
Hey brian. Welcome to PIO. Haven't been on a whv yet myself so probably not the best person to ask but I think £5000 sounds a good amount! Maybe check out the YHA website, they seem to have a good reputation
wolvesaussie
I have met loads of whv over the last year they all seem to be having a great time
grahamffc
There are loads of hostels in Melbourne, but I have heard the best recommendations of Base, Habitat, and Urban Central. If going in January try to for base as it is located just a block away from St Kilda Beach. Work will be fine so long if you are looking for call centres etc, you'll be going at a competitive time when many other backpackers in town (Melbourne swells from January to March) but sure if it takes a while that's more time on the beach. SalParadise
Hi Guys, Thanks for the warm welcome. I can't wait to come over and see Australia plus my mates visa was just accepted for WHV which was delayed due to a heart condition. Green lights are on, I feel pretty comfortable with 5k, I will check out all the hostels recommended. I couldn't have asked for a better response. Thanks a lot guys Brian

SalParadise
Thanks Stacey, We fully intend on working straight away. What are the best job searching websites or hostels in Melbourne? B Edited August 23, 2014 by SalParadise
kyliedonut
Myself and friend spent some time in the Outback to save some money before buying campervan and travelling around Oz. We worked for a fab company and loved the Outback. Check out The Outback Loop. We worked in Innamincka but Birdsville is just as good. Usually like you to commit to 3 months but we stayed nearly 6 months as we loved it. And everyone seemed to have a connection to Scotland...."ahh you're from Scotland, you must know John Smith then"

Some fantastic advise handed down, so thanks for your input. It's very much appreciated. if you don't mind, could anybody recommend good places for music festivals etc? kyliedonut
I went to Falls festival in tasmania for new year, was pretty awesome. Depends what music you're in to really, there's plenty to choose from in summer month Jan to March
