i have just started the process of requirements for oz i am 5 points short for a 175 visa as this is best for me. Just a money racket £100 to do the IELTS! As a nurse and a british citizen what a scam and insult. What does anybody else think?
i sat the ielts test in dec for the same reason. i am english, have english degree and i teach english!!!! hello?!!??***** do you really think i need to sit a test mr immi oz man? it was easy (obviously) but a bloody long day, i had a 3hr exam on sat morning after a bit of a heavy night then had to go back in the early evening for an oral exam!!! i guess they give you 5 extra points for it now, so want to be 100% sure you speak good english but it still seems a bit crazy!!

Exactly what I said to my husband last night! We too are just starting on the very long and winding road and this could possibly be a problem. We will be going on my husbands skilled visa and though he is very experienced in his job which entails, science, technical drawing etc. his strong point is not english.
We had a look at the IELTS website for some examples and it did not help. It seems very unfair that his trade is in demand in Oz and we are born and bred English citizens but for the sake of 5 points we may not get to live our dream!
Anyone any ideas around this I would love to hear from them.

you only need to score 7 points on the test and part of this is an oral exam. if you are born and bred in england will it really be that hard to sit an english language test? it is quite a basic test. you do a listening test and fill in the correct answer, a reading test and answer the questions on the text and a piece of writing. most of the people i sat with were from all over the world with many different languages and they agreed it was not so hard. you def should give it a go. good luck!!

The cost of trying to get over to Oz is just rocketing and rocketing, what with agents fees, TRA fees, medicals, visa fees now anoth £100........

My advisor said that if i did not want to do the test the alternative is the 176 sponser route (as a nurse) as here you only need115 point as i can gather from what she said. Not sure from the trade for your hubby though maybe some one out there can help you futher and good luck!
Im not against this test but I do agree, why does everything cost all the time?

IELTS - an easy way to lose 100 quid but also a fairly easy way to get those extra points if you need them.
It's not overly difficult on a technical level, but for me it seemed a long day. The listening, reading and written tests were conducted over a three hour period in the morning (without a break) and then had to wait about three hours 'til about 4 in the afternoon for the speaking test, which lasted about 15 minutes and was a doddle.
I agree, it is a bit insulting but if you want the points, then swallow your pride, cough up the dosh and sit the test.

There is that option but my husband does not want to be tied to one employer for 4 years. We are thinking perhaps state sponsored then at least he can move employers if the job is not fulfilling enough.

Hi Juliej My oh has to do this test also, last year at 39 she wouldn't have to take it, now she's 40.... lose 5 points due to age... she feels the same as you. I have tried to lessen the insult to her English heritage by stating it's not to prove she's English, it's to gain an extra 5 points via the 'back door' to achieve 120 points, small comfort I know, I don't have to sit it, I'd still be cheesed off. For what it's worth my advice would be to sit it, read the threads on this site with regard the choice of 175 v's the 176 visa routes.
