My First Three Weeks In Perth

Having never been here before its even better than what we imagined.
got afully furnished house in secret harbour (rockingham) for a month while we explored the areas ,agreat site for long or short term rentals when you first arrive HOLIDAYLETTINGS.CO.UK

The first week sorting banks etc ,then my husband has had to under go certain courses to get certificates, yes you do need a certificate to pee here!

we have done lots of driving around different suburbs ,this really does help in deciding what is a nice area or not, secret harbour were we are now is lovely especially as we have two young children.mandurah 10mins down the road is also nice.infact we have just sucured a rental in madora bay abrand new 4x2 really close to beach, parks shops etc.

also had a trip up north this week ,mainly to find ikea ,drove up the coast road to hillarys, scarborough, mindarie absolutly beautiful up north ,infact my husband wanted to start looking for a rental up there.but as we have one lined up I wont risk it as they are hard to come by .

Jobs i have never seen so many jobs advertised in one paper ,most are plentiful even cleaners are getting $17ph + ,lots of driving jobs ,beauticians, hairdressers.
my husband is a joiner but he is not doing that over here ,but from what it seems there is jobs here for trades ,everywhere you look houses are half finished ,new estates going up everywhere.

shopping. food expensive you have to go to different places for certain things, spudshed for all your fruit+veg half the price of the supermarkets.but im still learning anyway its good for the diet .

clothes carnt say ive had a good look, but we needed sun hats for the kids cheapest i could find from kmart were $20 each and sun suits very expensive so anyone with kids stock up on beachwear ,sunglasses etc

if anyone wants any info just let me know and i will try to help?

Hi,
What a good threat............very helpful to everyone taking the plunge.
I have been to hillary's, Mindari, Scarborough, I stayed in duncraig for 6 weeks, and your right it is beautiful, O/H fell in love with Hillary's, I loved Whitfords for shopping, it was great. I have been looking at Clarkson & Port Kennedy to locate to...........I wasn't so keen on Mandurah but only went there for the day. Im sure its as nice as all the other places around and they are doing so much work there.

Im sure more posts of your kind would be helpful and appreciated by all.

Thanks

Wendy

Hi

We are still trying to decide between Perth and the Gold Coast, but need to make our minds up fairly quickly because we need to tell our agent as we are applying for a 176 State Sponshorship Visa.

Lots of people have advised that there is a lot of work in and around the Gold Coast, but we're not sure about Perth!

Eammon is a carpenter - from what you say, it seems that there is plenty of work out there too?

We also have two children (12 & 6) - what about schools and things to do?

I would be really grateful for any advice you can give. I just want to be sure we make the right choice?

Many thanks

Denise

We don't live in Mandurah but have been there many times on our way to our friends up in Perth. There's a new train line which has been just finished and I think its about 45 mins to an hour into the city and about $8 return and is supposed to be very reliable. The drive is similar but you have to allow for peak traffic so not sure how long it would take it you drove at that time.

Load of PIO people living locally I'm sure they would be willing to help.

You couldn't much more different places in Oz than Perth and the Gold Coast.
I'd compare the Gold Coast to the Miami of Oz, high rise building right on the beach, not my cup of tea at all!
Perth is one of the nicest places in Oz to live and a lot more suitable for a family IMO.

Hi thanks very much - I have been chatting to Ali on another thread that I posted yesterday on the WA Forum and between you both you have more or less convinced me that Perth is the place to be.

I certainly don't want to live any where that has a 100mph pace of life - no point in leaving here really! We're after a more laid back way of life. My only concerns really were will there be enough work out there for Eammon who is a carpenter and the cost of house prices, but I am going to check out some websites. Meanwhile if you can offer any advice on either of these topics it will be warmly welcome.

Ali has also highligted some good areas in and around Perth, but if you can offer any more, we'd be really grateful - obviously with two children aged 12 & 6 schools, etc are really important

Thanks again

Denise

Hi
We have been in Perth now for a couple of months wife a nurse, there are a lot of jobs advertised but it is different to UK because a lot of workers are casual they still advertise for jobs, the wages are lower factory work $18 - 20 hr more if you are casual .
