I stayed in Melbourne for 9 months found Lonely planet guide to Australia great help when need in fo on Hostels and general Info.
There will be an airport bus to the city but get book in to a hostel from uk then look around for better one when settled.Best people to ask are travellers in the hostel full of tips and trick etc
