I've been there on holiday, but not to live (yet!!). You should talk to Ali, who is happy in Perth and Jo in the Sunshine Coast (both mods) and *******. They are the ones that spring to mind. They all seem to be having a great time.
We went to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and it is beautiful. The beaches are clean and so are the streets.
I don't doubt that like any country there are problems and issues, but no way is it worse than the UK.
I can't comment on the emotional issues. I'm sure that will be the worse part. If you can deal with that i think you'll be OK.
