I think it depends on the age of the children - it took my daughter who was 11 at the time quite a while to get her head around the idea - she would have been devestated had we told her only 12 weeks before we left (her initial reaction when we said we were thinking of going was that she burst into tears and asked how she could possibly leave her whole life behind). 12 months later, (after lots of discussions), she had warmed to the idea, had a pen pal at the school she was going to and looking forward to her leaving party. I think it has to be down to knowing your own children and how they may react to the situation. I had to remember that we couldn't treat it like we were taking them on holdiay but changing their lives forever.
