Hi Tracey,
My OH is also an electrician and this is what our agent has told us regarding further training when you get to Oz..these are her precise words.

VETASSESS at the end of the practical will issue Electrician trades with a certificate which allows them to apply for a ‘Provisional’ licence, this means Steve can go and work under this license however he will have to complete a small amount of study to familiarise with Australia wiring laws.
Once he completes the extra study which can take up to 6months or as long as he takes to complete it (most people can do this in under 12months and the program would be administered by a similar body to a City and Guilds college) only then can Steve apply for a permanent license after that. It doesn’t have anything to do with qualifications not being recognised, its merely because they don’t expect a UK trained Electrician to know Australian wiring laws and OH&S requirements for this reason they can only be issued with a provisional license to start with and work on until his further training in Australia allows him to apply for the permanent license. Its for the applicants own safety as well as the employer that this is in place.

We don't know what the work situation is but they are supposed to be starting some huge new building projects in Victoria soon so I guess that will help! Steve is also doing his practical in July - at least we hope so, we are still waiting to hear.
Anyway, I hope that helps a bit!
