Perth is less than an hour by train from Mandurah and I'm reliably informed that it's a very good service.
yep on public holidays you'll find most of Bunbury closed but there are usually events taking place around the area for kids/families etc the local paper will list what's on over holidays. The cafes are open and the cafes in Koombana bay are open together with MASH Brewery.

We went to Mandurah on a public holiday and it was absolutely heaving but lovely to see all the pubs open and lots of people enjoying themselves along the waterfront.

Bunbury looks like it will be having its own Mandurah type waterfront over the next couple of years.
