Houses you buy tend to be bigger than uk houses ,so there is always an extra room to fill ,you could buy minimal stuff and then use it in a family or spare room in your new house.A futon will do as a sofa and bed for a few months ,a patio table can double up as a dining table etc .I would have a look at Welcome to Fantastic Furniture you also get freebies like TV'S and dinner sets which come in handy.
