Still being in the UK, I currently use AOL (America Online) and I find them, despite what most people will tell you, to be a very reliable (if slightly costly) ISP in the UK. They're very popular in America though. I hardly ever have service disruptions. I have also heard good things about Austranet, Access Net Australia and AT&T, also give CompuServe a look.
Just Google any of the names above, or if this post happens to have the table I got them in, then the links should still work and you should be able to directly access their websites from this.
I don't know as much about the South only ISPs, but still give them some consideration but if some are being used nationwide, they may offer better services.
