It differs from school to school!!!! They are all supposed to have a LOTE (Language Other Than English) in their curriculum from K upwards and it can be anything from sign language through to Cherokee if they can find teachers to teach it. Most schools go with an Asian language - Japanese, Indonesian and Mandarin are very common. The European languages less so although you can sometimes find them teaching French, Spanish and to a lesser extent German. Not a really academic curriculum though for the most part, just a few words and an appreciation of the relevant cuisine - not usually the passage translations and grammar structures of our childhood, more the living language approach which is far more entertaining for kids!
