Hi - I am a new member in PomsinOz. My wife used to be the Royal Melbourne's CEOs personal assistant - and we lived in Toorak & Sth Yarra because it is easy to get to the Royal Melbourne and avoids having to live in the crowded part of town. Depends on what you both will be doing I guess. Have a look at some videos of the area - from VEOH or YouTube. There are many more short term accommodation places available in Sth Yarra than in Fitzroy area of course. Some operators rent out 100's, that used to be rental flats, just for short term. One of my friends owns part of questapartments.com.au
I just uploaded a property for rent soon in Toorak South Yarra area - see RentalsinOz.com - that is a web site linking to this - see Migration, accommodation blogs. It would be too big for you of course, but there are heaps of people here renting out "below the radar" like me.
Bike riding is fun in Melbourne, and south of the Yarra is where the fun starts.
