In the UK Merchant Navy (and I think internationally) "reefer" means Refrigerated Cargo. Ergo a reefer is a ship that carries refrigerated cargo. I've no idea whether these ships also carry ordinary containers on deck or something. (When I'm out sailing yachts in the Solent, I see lots of different cargo ships but I don't know enough to know what sort of ships 3/4 of them are to be honest.)

I would suggest that you give the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency a ring. The number is 02389 329100. Ask for somebody in the Southampton Marine Office. They should be able to tell you all about "Reafer Containers" if these are something different.

Best wishes

Gill
