You sound as if you are in the same boat as me,

I too am married to an aussie citizen (originally english) and also live on the central coast,
I arrived here with one of my 3 daughters (the other 2 older and stayde in the uk) on aug 5th 2006
i got all application ready to apply for my spouse visa (i did use an agent) and i applied on shore here in oz, i had an interview with a migration officer in Sydney on sep 28th 06 the same day that i lodged my application.
All went well and would of been granted temp spouse visa 820 the same day (the migration officers words) but she wanted another paper from my ex husband about my daughter that i had brought to oz with me.
This took a little over a week to sort out and then sent this to the migration officer who then granted my visa - all in all from lodgement date to visa granted 15days.
