Its much easier to get close to wildlife here. Even in your back yard you should come across skinks, gekos (lizards), many diferent types of birds, possums etc. Out in the bush you might expect to see (depending on where you are) roos, walabies, emu's etc.
On the reptile side, I haven't seen too many snakes maybe only half a dozen or so over the last ten years but you will often see lizards, skinks, gekos, water dragons. Occasionally in the bush you will come across goannas (up to 1-1.5m long). If you live on the edge of bushland you're more likely to see snakes in your backyard occasionally, often tree snakes but also possibly red bellied blacks, browns and pythons, not sure about tigers they're more common in NSW I think?. Very few people ever see a Taipan but they can be found from northern NSW upwards.
Some of the birdlife is fantastic and easy to see. There are the parrots, corellas and lorrikeets such as king parrots, cockatiels, crimson rosellas, rainbow lorrikeets and cockatoos just to name the common ones. After a while you realise that there's more than just these brilliantly colour birds around which are quite unique also such as lyre bird, bower bird just to name two..
