HI - We started out in NZ and are now in OZ. Both are totally different. From what we have experienced it is easier to get into NZ than OZ and you can give NZ a try first. However it is a hard place to live if you are coming from civilization - that being that you can not get much over there, especially on the South Island. We were in Christchurch and it was very depressing. A bit like shanty town, poor in a lot of areas. We lived outside in a nice area but still felt like it was the back end of the world! It is quite expensive to live there, wages are low and morgage rates currently at 10.55%!!! Much easier to get a work permit - you can get it on the spot with a contract from an employer, in OZ it takes about 4 months!!! As far as dogs are concerned, we took 3 dogs and 3 cats. Was quite expensive but we had them in kennels first. Would advise to kennel them in UK not in NZ as they are not good to travel that long and then have to be put into kennels in NZ whilst you find a place to live. Make sure you get a good kennel who have done export to NZ before and they will be fine. Much better for pets in NZ as there are no nasty inects that kill them there! We lost 2 cats here in OZ in the first week alone!!!
You really need to decide what lifestyle you are after though. If you want quiet and isolated and have lots of money go to NZ, if you want civilization, better wages, warmth and more opportunities then come to OZ, but it is harder here to get all the legal stuff sorted.
Hope that helps a bit.
Kerstin
