All those mentioned in west are fine, my favourite though probably most expensive aprt of west melbourne is Williamstown, on the sea, opposite city, 30 minutes by train max to West Melbourne.

More affordable would be looking further along the Werribee line e.g. Altona (where I shall be looking next year...)
