Thanks for the replies.

We are planning to spend a week in Melbourne just after we arrive to find a house, so we'll spend time checking out things like transport links when we're there.

The list of must haves is a good idea: we know we need at least 3 beds, I want off street parking, but we aren't too bothered about a garden. I guess we just need to refine it a bit - still we have 20 hours on a plane and a day in Singapore to do that!
