My son and his girlfriend have a house in Northcote (they're 30ish, just to give you an idea). There's a train in to the CBD, and there seem to be plenty of bars, restaurants etc. Probably an up and coming area. The others also look OK, but someone on here may have some comments, eg. about parts of Coburg.
I think if you check the Domain section (property) on the Melbourne Age on-line, you can get various statistics about any area you're interested in, though I can't remember if it has crime rates.
