Yes, am afraid you definitely have to be aged 45 years or under at the time of application for any sort of Skilled Migrant visa (that is, to migrate to Australia using your Skilled trade).
We are migrating under the Student Visa, but as we hope this will also lead to Permanent Residency, we have to be under 45 years for this too.
As far as I know, you have to be under the magic 45 for a Sponsored Visa too, but plenty of folks on here are doing that, and they will put me right I'm sure
Take a look at www.immi.gov.au which is the Official Australian website for people wishing to migrate to Australia.
The good news? Well, New Zealand accepts skilled migrants up to age 55 years.
