There are plenty of clubs around Chapel Street that go on til the next morning but, having said that, my 19 year old couldn't wait to get back to Newcastle! She did say though that she would have had a better time if she'd been with all her mates. As it was she just met up with a few of her friends who are travelling and came to stay.
Cinema complexes with bowling alleys, shopping malls and so on are springing up everywhere. The main ones are Melbourne Central, Crown, Chadstone, Highpoint and Airport West to name but a few but there is a local plaza close to nearly every suburb you could name.
Personally, I am not into the club scene but instead love to watch the oriental youngsters on the dance mats in Galactic Circus at Crown... They are amazing!
Brunswick and Fitzroy has a very groovy cafe culture/wine bar scene that could be assimilated to places like Hampstead in London or Greenwich Village in New York. These places tend to attract more 'alternative' individuals and has a high lesbian population.
The gay scene is more towards Prahran, Windsor and Balaclava and there are plenty of clubs that cater to every taste and persuasion.
Safe night buses leave Flinders Street in the early hours and have a service where you can use a mobile phone on board to call a taxi from where the bus drops you off to get home. Depending on where you settle, these buses are great and very safe.
Happy clubbing!!!
