Joe, my advice to you is to join the nearest Surf Life Saving Club. I have been involved with Surf Life Saving for over 30 years and it really is the best way to learn to swim, surf and use a whole lot more surf craft. You gain a healthy respect for the dangers as well as the fun, that the ocean can offer. You will be trained in Surf Life Saving and rescusitation and therefore will become a valued member of your community.
Learning to surf is a whole lot easier when you have learned to be confident in the sea.
Joining your local Surf Life Saving Club is also the best way to make friends.
Good luck, I'm sure you will love Australia.
Eric.
